What the heck are Facebook/Google+/LinkedIn/other social networks?
What are they good for?
What are they used for?
What value can i get from them?
- Facebook was the first, and is the most popular. It is (normally) used to connect people together, be able to talk to them. You can also expose what you want of your life (let's say you went to KSC and want to post some photos of the VAB, then you can share it to your friends who can like and comment, etc...
But I guess you already know that. That's the basics on how to use a social network basically. Facebook was the first one (well, to really get off, if we don't count MySpace). Google+ is the Google variant (simpler from my point of view, maybe more used for sharing things then for the social connection part), and LinkedIn is a professional social network.
- Well, I kinda already answered to your first question there. Keep in mind that you have control over what you choose to put online (you can also write false information, I do that on my Facebook profile). So yeah, Facebook is kinda like a online life log, where you can write bits of your personal history, attach images and videos, and connect with your friends or people that you have met and want to share stuff with. You can do that as well with Google+, it's just that it's Google that handles the thing. And with LinkedIn, well, you get to put your professional informations on, so others can find you when they need people with abilities you have.
On Facebook and Google+, you have pages that represents a known person, a group, a location, whatever you please, that you can "Like" or "Follow" to get updated on what they post and share.
- But, as Facebook is full of duck faces selfies made my teenagers (mostly girls) that for some wants to get the maximum amount of friends (yeah, the first question I'm asked when I give my FB account is "How many friends do you have?"), so, while Facebook can be great to talk to your friends and even your family if they're far from you, it is more and more made up for those teenagers.
I'm not enough on G+ to tell how the userbase is, but it is surely a bit cleaner as there's not as many people as in FB, and it has been criticized, especially when Google linked the YouTube and G+ accounts (which is not a bad thing on itself, less accounts, but if you don't want a G+ account, well you're screwed), but it is definitely a good solution if you want to get started in social networking.
Twitter is a bit off in these explanations because Twitter is a base of "followers". You like one person, then you follow him, and get updates on their "tweets" (text, photos, video, etc.) and has been known for its Hashtags (those #WhatAmIdoingHere thing).
- You can follow the life of people you like, share to the world (or only the dudes you want) what you want, organize events and things. I guess you can try the different social sites.
Whoa, I went in like ultra-writable mode there
Hope you find useful information in what I wrote, Artlav.
