The saga of trying to find a Linux distribution with a 2.6 kernel that will run on 1995-era hardware continues.
Slitaz looked promising, but the kernel on the install disk needs a Pentium II.
Debian's default initrd is missing or doesn't load the proper hard disk drivers for the root device. For a bit I thought I had the needed driver pinned down and could modprobe it in at the initramfs fallback prompt, but now I'm not so sure: a device file is created for the drive, but not for any of the partitions on it.
And as of Monday my schedule will have a ton more real life packed in to it...
