Well to be fair, the biggest part of Iceland looks like this:

More confusion: in Spanish, Iceland is written "Islandia" which means "land of" or island country.
It appears that it originated long ago by confused pronunciation (probably in Spanish) of

Iceland
with
island

then is:

Isla = Island
landia = land (similar to termination -land or -stan)

Islandia = land of islands or island country
:facepalm:
when it should be:

ice = hielo
land = landia

Iceland = land of ice (maybe Hielolandia be called?)

More confusion

The Polish name is Islandia, and we tend to convert English names ending in -land into -landia (e.g. Ireland -> Irlandia), so there was I time I actually believed that some English dude saw an island on the sea and named it, well, Island.

Oh, and the country TLD? .is

And the name in the native language? Ísland!

On the other hand, it took me some to realize that Newfoundland is a composite name (New Found Land). It did not help that some genius translated the name into Polish as Nowa Funlandia. I was always wondering where (Old) Funland is. My 11-year-old self reckoned that it must be a fun place.

Bonus: there is an entire song based on the New-Found-Land pun:

Ìs = Ice
Land = Country
It's that simple. :lol:

Faroe Islands is Føroyar to the natives.

Før: Derived from the Norse for "sheep". Still used in Danish (Får)
Oyar: Short form of "Oyggjar" meaning "Islands" commonly used in place names. "Eyjar" in Icelandic.

These countries were named during the medieval warm period (before the little ice age) and all european settlements were close to the southern tip of Greenland and far south of Iceland. Compared to Iceland it was very green at the time.

In my experience the most common landscape in Iceland looks like this:

Reminds me a lot of the scenery shown in the movie Oblivion. Pretty much because a lot of it was filmed there.... :P

I thought of Oblivion as well when speaking of Iceland.

I liked that movie. It was great, maybe a storyline a bit too simple, but the visuals were great and it shows Iceland in all its beauty.
Are you an effective team?

Well, they are literally called "Islands of Sheep" in Polish: "Wyspy Owcze". :P

Wow! I didn't expect that. Very few Scandinavians would know that Føroyar means sheep islands. Even Faroese language has changed so much since the middle age that sheep islands would be "Seyða-oyggjaranar" :rofl:

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's quest, of all people...

IJN Musashi found.

Already some days ago... but its really good that the final missing wreck of the Yamato-class ships is found... looks like it shared the fate of the Yamato after capsizing.

... depending on polycount.

And the skill of the artist.

I can recommend reading OrbiterConfig.pdf page 33 "Performance optimisation".

The fun part is that we translate some names, but not the others.

For example, we call New York Nowy Jork, but the capital of India is New Delhi.

Newfoundland is the standard name for every newly discovered land, now that the Canadians were too lazy to change Newfoundland's name every other country has to start as Newfoundland2. Stupid Canadians.
