How are we going to clean all of this up?

Once you reach university and live together with people with limited time and limited motivation you'll know how to clean something up.

Priorities and "smaller than x does not matter".

Pro tip: Unwashed dishes belong in the freezer.

Most of the dots seem in a rather low orbit, and shoud fall back with time. Geostationary debris are the most vicious, because their lifetime is theorically unlimited.

I'm rather fond of an orbital laser to clean up the smaller stuff, but that's probably not a viable option for political reasons. The bigger stuff? Rendezvous, grab it, and drag it back to Earth if it's not worth much and it's not radioactive, salvage the usable stuff, and kick the hot stuff the hell away from Earth.

What is small? And can you make a laser hit just the debris and not everything before and behind it?

I heard the windstorm that hit Europe yesterday was bad, but what does being in a windstorm in a open field feel like? A hurricane except without the rain?

No, not at all - usually we also had the rain during the strongest gusts, when a thunderstorm augmented the storm.

On Heligoland and Borkum we had measured mind-blowing 191 km/h during a gust (All time record in German history); A place in Denmark got 193 km/h winds.

On the Brocken further inland the record yesterday was a 163 km/h gust.

The weakest Hurricane (Category 1) starts at the 120 km/h for a one minute average - thats essentially what most of the European North Sea cost got yesterday. Some places got Category 2 winds.

The Brocken is usually the best place to experience strong storms, because it is essentially a 1000 m high pyramid rising above the flatland (you can see its top even from hundred km away on a good day), with the rest of the Harz mountains hiding behind it.

9 people died in Germany yesterday, mostly by getting hit by trees.

1 woman died in France, she was walking on the seashore in Belle-Ile, a small, low island on the Atlantic coast. She was taken by a wave, the body was found later. Never underestimate the power of the Ocean.

Another victim of the "Orkan Christian": One of the famous twin wind mills of Greetsiel had been destroyed.

Greetsieler_Zwillingsm%C3%BChlen_2010.jpg

The oldest one (the red mill) had been resisting storms at the coast since 1705, the younger green mill is from 1856. The green mill was destroyed, the club maintaining the windmills is asking for donations since they can't pay the reconstruction themselves.

The damage is: Cap, sails and gallery had been completely ripped off the mill. There is a large hole in the brick walls. Damage is estimated to go into the multiple hundred thousand Euros.
