Gaming Race Into Space discussion thread

Wow... how did you get the money to launch a manned Soyuz in 1961 ??

I threw Soyuz II off the launchpad with luck mostly, I let the USA get Orbital Satellite so I could research on the Soyuz capsule and R-7 Rocket. i didnt research EVA Suits so the docking, EVA and re-entry all failed. It was a miracle all of them got back! Gagarin and Leonov got sent to hospital for injuries during splashdown and recovery.! R&D on the Soyuz was about 40% by the time Soyuz II got off the ground. It was mostly luck that got me through, I had a lot of close calls through the program!

I ask myself the same. Also how did he get the needed 12 astronauts for doing a joint docking mission in 1961? (including 6 months of training)

Since when can two Soyuz capsules hold 12 people?

Soyuz II was manned, Soyuz III was not.

Still a bit short on astronauts there. Even if we assume that you removed all from Vostok after the first flight.

For a joint duration you need (2*3)*2 cosmonauts (backup crews).

Also, the Proton + Probe successful lunar flyby same year, wow...

2 primary crews, two back-up crews, makes four crews of 3 astronauts. If I remember correctly, the first group of astronauts has just seven, so you have just enough for two Soyuz crews there.

Only 1 person flew in a Vostok, the rest went directly into Soyuz Program.

I smell a save game cheat.

So you have two people in Vostok, since you still need a back-up crew there. Means you have just 5 people left.

I never set backups for missions, this is where Urwumpe thought I needed 12, I only set primary crews.

Once again, no backups are set.

Thanks for the accusation, made my day it did!

Once again, no backups are set.

I see it in the change log, there is a option to disable the need for backup crews and just have one crew per mission.

Still, even with the reduced need for astronauts, you had burned about 6 times more money in 1961 as you would have after a perfect string of firsts. Proton + Luna + Soyuz + EVA + Booster (unless you wanted to use Proton there)

Oh but this is NEW !! Before the v1.0, you had to assign primary & backup crews for each mission. Changes a lot of things !

You still have to, unless you disable this feature. But then, every small itch of the astronauts would mean you scrub a mission usually...but then, I rarely had needed my backup crews in the past games.

But such settings also make the lunar landing hardly comparable... Usually you had been barely able to get enough crews for Soyuz before the third recruitment, including astronauts dropping out.

Well, I didn't touched any files and it seems to work :P

In Autumn 1959 I got the 1/2 price hardware event, and I had spent near to nothing in April 1959.

This explains it but you have been awfully lucky !! :)

And then you launched with zero R&D on them after still spending about 150 Credits on the hardware?

Yes, since I asked you some time ago for tips I played the game multiple times. Yes, I was lucky. But that is only because I reached the best result, that I was pleased with, because I played it multiple times. That was my best ever score, so I decided to post it.

Probability suggests that given infinite time, I can have a successful Lunar landing on my first mission with no R&D, because, the game is all about the roll of the dice, sooner or later, it had to happen.

How do you play as USSR instead of USA? I can't figure it out. :P

Sure, in the main menu next to the country flag there is an icon that either looks like a computer or the head of a man. You can click to toggle. If a computer is showing that means the computer will take control of the country, if a man is showing that means you can take control.

Tried another game with USSR in historical mode. Things began perfectly. Had the 50% off event in fall 1958. Then precious "no failure" events for Vostok. Focused on the Vostok that performed quite well, and had all the steps before the USA. Then I lacked of money around '65, and my Moon program stalled. I managed to get the Manned Lunar Pass & Manned Lunar Orbital in '67 - '68, but the LM was not ready, because of poor budget. I was ready for LM tests in '69 - '70. As I was launching my forelast mission (lunar orbital LM test), the USA came back from nowhere and landed a Gemini/Cricket on the Moon in fall 1970. I was ready to launch my Lunar Landing the next season. Duh.

I've been there too. That got me sick of BARIS for a week.

Finally landed on the moon:

As you can see this was a very late landing.
