STS-3, twenty-nine years ago. The third orbital test flight of Columbia.

Fleet V4.7.1 is just about ready for release (working on the documentation now); awhile back I received permission from Gazza to use the meshes from his STS Payloads add-on and I've been adapting some of them to the new fleet as time permits. I figured I'd start at the beginning of the Space Shuttle Program...

I'm looking forward to the new version Shuttle Fleet:thumbup:

One of the most interesting rendezvous and docking missions I've done:

Boosted SaturnV

I'm still having a lot of fun with Velcro Rockets. :)

A SaturnV with 2 SRB. 140 tons to LEO, easily. You can probably push it to 150 tons... :p

11_04_08_13-13-38_S-II.jpg

The scenario, for those who could be interested (requires Velcro Rockets + Velcro Saturns) :

Code:

A boosted SaturnV. Capacity : more than 140 tons to LEO. Press "O" to start.

Thanks for that! I'm always interested in playing with new Velcro ideas.

I'm searching an use for it... Putting a complete nuclear reactor into orbit ? Sending lunar surface base elements with enough fuel for landing to the Moon ? Or just throw a 1-piece 150-tons spaceship at Mars ? Or a complete military station to GEO ?

At that lift capacity the Saturn V's cargo fairing actually gets a little restrictive.

I fully agree. But with Velcro, there's always room for improvement :

A fearsome boosted INT-21. No third stage, 180 tons to LEO, 33-feet fairing ! Still no idea what to put inside... :hmm:

I try. Velcro's autopilot is pretty good. Maybe there's a way to do a little better, but not that much I think.

So I shamelessly stole your launcher to do something I've been thinking about for a while: Place a Skylab-like station in lunar orbit using almost-real technology.

11040823-10-20S-1C.jpg

The Big Dog launches from Wideawake, disintegrating the pad and everything else with it. Standard S-IC, 4 SRBs, stretched S-II and S-IVB carrying the ESASTAR module.

11040823-11-32S-II.jpg

Makes it to orbit just fine, but the stretched S-IVB can't make the TLI burn unless it's 100% full of fuel. So...

11040823-12-56S-1C.jpg

Refueling flight launches from Jarvis. Standard, 2 SRBs, stretched, stretched. No payload because the S-IVB is the refueling tanker.

11040823-16-29S-IVb-1.jpg

Fuel transfer underway. Took 5 minutes to rig the S-IVBs with docking ports for this purpose.

11040823-19-14esastar.jpg

TLI complete. Uses every freakin' drop of fuel in that stretched S-IVB, but it'll make it. The ESASTAR has a respectable amount of delta-v by itself and can handle LOI and some extra maneuvering.

11040823-21-15esastar.jpg

Settling into lunar parking orbit.

11040823-22-29S-II.jpg

First crew flight, Antares-LR from Kourou. Note the proper fairing and LES.

11040823-23-51S-II.jpg

Fairing jet.

11040823-28-14S-IVb.jpg

Still a little bit of gas left in the S-IVB's tank after TLI, I think I'll bring it with me. The Antares-LR's delta-v budget is pretty tight, and too much spent during rendezvous means no trip home for you.

11040823-28-59esastar.jpg

Home, sweet home!

Great screenshots! If you think those Saturns are big, here's something I put together a while ago (not sure why, would have been way more efficient to just design a whole new rocket.)

This is actually a Saturn C8 derivative that can launch an interstellar probe the size of Hayabusa (just had it lying around in my install) to 150 km/s velocity from Earth orbit.

Awesome! Maybe we can beat the Voyager 1 with it.

That's why I launched them all from different spaceports, just to preserve some small shred of realism. The first 2 launches took place within about a day of each other, and the third about four days later. I may add some smaller modules later, but I need to give WIN time to rebuild their launch pad. :shifty:
