OFSS Project Discussions

I would gladly fly 37, seems like the shuttle missions are something I'm decent at, from my practice runs. Just need to practice reentering

Thanks for your responses and welcomes!

Are there any plans for missions after January? At a minimum, it would be nice to set up a series of maintenance missions.

You got it and welcome to Orbiter-Forum by the way! :welcome:

Posted earlier in this thread. ;)

Right now none planned. If someone else wishes to pick up the project I'd be OK with that. Ultimately I considered doing a moon station and or moon base construction project with some missions coming from OFSS, but I may not have the time to commit to that project right after this one ends.

Rodger, sorry to hear that mate. Hopefully you can get her fixed soon. I'll get the schedule sorted this weekend.

Do the newly updated versions of ENERGY Project and Mir-2 affect OFSS in any way?

Also, the Space Tankers that Kulch has just released may be of use in servicing the space station by providing fuel in a realistic manner.

I have no idea mate, we would need to test it. I wouldn't update your OFSS install with the new version until we specify the new version is required.

I haven't touched my OFSS install yet. I'm rebuilding my main installation and intend for it to be able to work with OFSS as well. However, I also intend to use the latest versions in that installation.

I'm going to start a new installation of Orbiter and check each OFSS mission to see if any of them are affected adversely by the new versions of Kulch's add-ons. That will have to wait until tomorrow, though. I won't have access to my main computer until then.

Thanks Nemoricus, I appreciate your help with this. I'll try updating just ENERGIA/Mir-2 in my OFSS installation to see of any problems crop up.

Mir-2 is actually new as a separate add-on. It may be that ENERGY no longer includes Mir-2 components.

Also, these add-ons need to be checked as people will use the latest versions as opposed to the older ones that OFSS has used so far. It wouldn't do for new members to run across OFSS and then have problems just because they were using the most recent versions of the add-ons.

Well if there is a conflict with the new version and the OFSS project then we will most likely stick to the old version of ENERGIA. If Mir-2 is separate then I suspect there will in fact be some issues with using the new version for OFSS.

So again to eveyone else, do not update your OFSS installation with the latest ENERGIA project until we've had a chance to test everything. If we update to the latest ENERGIA then I will include a note with an updated list of required addons in the documentation of a future mission. Until then do not upgrade ENERGIA in your OFSS installation. Cheers.

I didn't realize Kveldulf's mission was so soon. He reported he has PC problems and can't do it. Is anyone else interested in doing the next mission?

Mission 26 includes Discovery + Rec.Mod. I've re-scheduled it for tomorrow, please post here if you'd like this mission.

well I've already flown a few flights but if no one else wants it I'll fly it

Ok radekpl, you can do the mission since you only had one before. I didn't get a chance to prepare the mission yesterday, will do now. A little more testing is involved this time with the release of the updated ENERGY project.

Someone needs to add OFSS to Orbiterwiki.

Beyond the OFSS?

I've been playing around with Momo and Jekka's HLV. I know there has been some interest in expanding the OFSS missions once the station construction is complete.
Is there enough interest to continue on to a set of Lunar base contruction missions? Here is what I've been mulling over...
1. Already mentioned, is there enough people interested...
2. HLV, or wait until the Arrow is released with all the extras included;
problem, Arrow "tech-level" is waaay in the future, HLV, not so much.
3. Each module of the HLV is another vessel, how to solve so many thing crowding up the scenario editor, or [F3] vessel selection screen. I think I can solve this by locating the modules as meshes, once they've been "delivered" to the work site.
4. Where to build it, polar region? Brighton crater? Copernicus?
5. When to build; meaning, do we need a lunar orbital station first?
6. Use the HLV launcher, or an XR-5? If an XR-5, then how to refuel the thing once it's on the moon (without feeling like a cheat).

There's many more problems/barriers that I've come up with. But I think I may only want to burn one bridge at a time.

Plus to keep the station involved, should we have the HLV (or another lifter) deliver the modules to the station, where an XR-5 is standing by, transfer the cargo (lifter returns to AIA, XR-5 goes to the moon), XR-5 can drop the module off in lunar orbit without landing then return to the station, the module lands at base via it's own engines. No need to worry so much about refueling the -5.

Or, go Direct, and build a lunar station using the upper stage of the launcher (those things hold a lot of fuel).

Food for thought guys. Any recommendations/thoughts/ideas?

I'm going to go try out the HLV right now (I've been meaning to). The Arrow IS rather high-tech, and as much as I love to fly it, it doesn't really fit. However, if the XR5 becomes UCGO-compatible, you could use that instead to deliver the stuff.

It already is in a way thanks to this: [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3312"]Universal Cargo Deck carrier for the XR5[/ame]

My own moon base plans will see the HLV base components converted to UCGO cargos and shipped to the moon.

I used Countdown84's tutorial http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3853 to configure the modules for use as payloads in the XR-5. I'd seen the UCD, but I already modified the HLV's .cfg files.
I'd done that because the LANDMfd that HLV refers to in the docs causes a CTD on a regular basis, and LOLA sometimes goes nuts and my base module would wind up way outside the crater somewhere. With the XR-5 I could spot land where I wanted and unload (added a URMS).
