*Sigh* Here we go again..

My best friend pointed me at an article in the Dutch news paper. It's Dutch so I have no reason to post it here (but it is THIS article). The article says that the NSA confirms that there was contact with aliens a couple of years ago. It were about 30 messages with math formulas and some things they couldn't understand. They say that the contact was established via Sputnik 1.

Now, this article was published in one of the most unreliable papers of Holland so I don't believe unless it's seriously confirmed

Your thoughts?

What is the problem there... did they not bother reading the "dossier" that they link to? ;)

http://www.nsa.gov/public_info/_files/ufo/key_to_et_messages.pdf (Spoiler warning - skip this and go to "Extraterrestrial Intelligence" first if you want some fun)

The full listing of tech articles can be found here, including the one that is referenced:

http://www.nsa.gov/public_info/declass/tech_journals.shtml

Especially this one might be a good clue for any serious journalist:

http://www.nsa.gov/public_info/_files/tech_journals/extraterrestrial_intelligence.pdf

In the most recent issue of NSA Technical Journal-Vol. XI No. 1 Mr. Lambros D. Callimahos discussed certain aspects of extraterrestrial intelligence and included several messages to test the readers ingenuity. In the following pages, Dr. H. H. Campaigne offers additional communication from outer space.

And that article by Lambros D. Callimahos is found here:

Contact via sputnik 1? The first ever Satellite that could only go beep, beep?

Hmm, contact via sputnik
...
Could sputnik even recieve a signal and relay it on? I thought ot just broadcast a signal for as long as it was up there

'A couple of years ago'? Sputnik 1 is long carbonized anyway, since 1958. (according to Wikipedia)

Seriously, it's disturbingly inconsistent: on the one hand people insist that we didn't have the tech to go to the moon in the late 60ies, on the other hand they think that the first ever satelite in orbit was able to receive and relay messages over several lightyears?? I don't get it...

Yea, well if there was life, maybe the Government should just put out a broadcast and prove that life does exist. This should help with all the conspiracy theories. How would the first satellite (the father of the :probe:) would get any alien contact?

By "a few years ago", do they mean 1977? In the hills of Wyoming?

Anybody trying to solve the 31 messages? I am already at message #13, it is really fun.

If we did make alien contact it would be all over the news... We would see people jumping off of cliffs... World leaders meeting... People praying... There would be multiple threads on the forum about such first contact... It wouldnt be on a supermarket tabloid... Hahaha i thought this was real for a second as i thought they forgot to put an A in NASA...

But seriously why would any alien civialization try to send a message... I can imagine the probelms they will face trying to organize such a message like how to organize ethnic groups and countries and religions... How would they feel about sending us pictures of their poor and dissease infested individuals...

Why would they even have those problems? That's the big issue with aliens civilisations, we only have a sample of one to look at so trying to work out what would motivate a potential alien intelligence is next to impossible.

The only thing you can be certain of is that any intelligent life would be aware of is the cost of doing something. Not monetary cost but the cost in time and energy to transmit a message.

This article describes the cost factor rather well.

Let me make first contact...

I'll determine their intentions. If they are less than benevolent I'll convince them we project a contagious collective form of insanity that will paint any plans of conquest they have as counterproductive. I'll also point out how we've depleted the Earth's resources and poisoned its seas. If those stategies fail, I'll improvise. I'm certain I'd think of something to dissuade them.

I doubt that an entire species will be the same... They will probably have countries, ethnic groups, and other differences...

Or...... they have a collective hive? Which renders those obsolete? Or at least extinct to them.

If they had one hive they would go extinct and it would need at least a few thousand hives at least in order to keep gene pool stable... Still allowing some sort of culture to be retained and thus distinctions...
