Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the 52-year conflict with left-wing rebels.
The Nobel committee praised him for a peace deal signed with Farc rebels, but rejected by Colombians in a vote.
Mr Santos said he dedicated the award to "all the victims of the conflict", and the Farc leader congratulated him.
About 260,000 people have been killed and more than six million internally displaced in Colombia.
The award did not include Farc leader Rodrigo Londono, known as Timochenko, who also signed the accord.

Unusual for one side only of the conflict to be awarded, but the peace deal was rejected in a referendum. Dangerous things referendums.

One can compare to the Good Friday Accord in Northern Ireland. These peace deals by their nature legitimize those who were once call "murderers", "terrorists", etc. It's too much for some people to stomach. But, none of us can tell Columbia what their price for peace should be.

One can compare to the Good Friday Accord in Northern Ireland. These peace deals by their nature legitimize those who were once call "murderers", "terrorists", etc. It's too much for some people to stomach. But, none of us can tell Columbia what their price for peace should be.

The reason for peace deals usually is simple: No side can win without loosing a lot. So, you accept some compromises. Yes, you talk with the enemy. Yes, you need to pay respect. Yes, people might stab you in the back for talking with the enemy and respecting him. But if you keep on fighting, you will exhaust your resources and even if you win, you will have less than you started your fight with.

Also, the people who stabbed into the back by the slim referendum rejecting the peace treaty, had been mostly urban residents and former government members, who a) had been far away from the dangers of the conflict and b) profited for a long time to have others fight it.

Those people exist.

I think it is a worthy receiver of that prize. Ending a war is the biggest of all fights.
