I would like to see a base on the North Pole and the South Pole. It would be fun to do either atmospheric or sub-orbital flights to the Poles from any of the usual bases. And perhaps there is some useful purpose related to going into orbit or coming back, but I don't know what that would be. :hello:

Bases aren't that hard to add. I've got a site a few hundred miles from the South pole and this is the config:

Code:
BASE-V2.0
Name = ISA-Dome
Location = -25.541111 -75.981667
Size = 1000
MapObjectsToSphere = TRUE

; === List of VOR beacons ===
BEGIN_NAVBEACON
END_NAVBEACON

Very simple as you can see, adding a runway can be done via the orbiter base maker or by copying one from an existing base. In the scenario I've got a mesh of a Prelude at the base co-ords.

Go into Config/Earth/Base folder. Copy Habana file, rename copy to North_Pole, then open it with notepad and change coordinates to north pole and change name of the base.

Voila.

Or use [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5607"]Base Maker[/ame] to create your own base.

Scary stuff.....

Points awarded for who made the original, more points for the actor who played The Thing. US contributors lose points as they should know!

EDIT Extra points awarded if folk know what tv series The Thing(actor) was in previously(US handicap still applies).

Doesn't Orbiter throw major wobblies if you set something precisely on a North/South pole?

Believe so. Tmac3000 & the rest of the IHP-A crew reported their hab modules jumping around when planted in chao-meng-fu crater on mercuries south pole.

Ill second that. That would be a cool addon :thumbup:

I thought someone had made a McMurdo somewhere, but I can't seem to find it at the 'hangar.

Mmmm... [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3659"]Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station[/ame]

FYI, base maker won't add bases close to the poles. It has to do with rendering issues near the poles.

As far as a "space base" goes, the polar regions are bad places. All orbits will be polar orbits, and it takes a lot of energy to change planes to align with other space objects. Also, you don't get a boost from the Earth's rotation, which gives something like an extra 460m/s at the equator.

You can model Concordia Station: [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concordia_Station"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concordia_Station[/ame]

Not at the pole, so BaseMaker works OK. I have done it as an ongoing project.... it looks nice with the default base objects for domes and hangars...

Make your own, "fullarmor2"! I used an hour on this base on Andøya, an island at 70 degrees latitude. It is the northernmost spaceport in the world. To make it, I used Google Earth, Orbiter Base Maker, Surface Tile Calculator and Spacethingy's surface tile tutorial.

question about bases

is there a packable base that can be loaded into a DGIV?

What's wrong with the UCGO XPDR beacon?

Nothing, other than that its a bit odd landing right on top of delicate equipment. A better mesh might have some eqipment at the side, & four omnis aranged in a square around the landing zone. Ill have to try that someday.

the range is really really low. also, would be kind of cosmetically appealing to have a landing pad next to a base that was built over several missions.

i wish i knew how to do meshes and graphics and build things....lol. i always thought it would be a good scenario to build an entire base someplace that doesn't have a .scr file to create the base platform ahead of time.

i am trying to develop a mission where i load up 2 dgiv's with 1 command module, 1 solar array, 1 VOR transmitter, 1 connector, 1 service module, and and a depolyable landing platform for future missions to and from the new base. this way i can fly to someplace "unexplored" and without a preset base (such as the UMMO demo on the moon).

Just would be more realistic and rewarding to try. I'm still very inexperienced with other forms of rockets and craft, so i'm hoping to deepen the experience that I can enjoy with the DGIV.

I realize that you can't name the base building it this way, but it would be trackable by targeting the same way to can target other cargos on the map and with the antenna.

hmmmm....i'm gonna have to spend some time learning about designing add-ons :) hopefully, i can learn something new.

Thank you for your feed back everyone!
