I've been playing around with the idea of moving to another country some time in the future (4-10 years from now). Although I quite like Canada, I'd really like to do something interesting with my life. I've been thinking of Australia, Switzerland, Germany, or maybe the UK or US. Any thoughts?

If you can stand the heat(/cold/rain/storm/hail etc), Oz is a nice place to be.

What profession are you after?

I'd like some kind of science-related profession, although something relating to computers would be nice, or even authoring. Weather isn't a problem in the least.

Maine is nice, New Hampshire too.

What are you looking to do.

I'd advise you to stay away from the U.S.

We're a much more entertaining country when you aren't directly affected by it.

Yeah you should get in side before it's to late.

It's not the weather you should be worried about, but the Wicked Witch of the West.

Hardly....

Move to South Africa. We have mild winters, warm summers and diverse cultures.

It's all lovely as long as you don't mind the constant danger of crime and idiotic statements made by the government...

What about France? They also have computers there...

If you move to the US, Colorado is good climate/scenery-wise. Avoid Texas (unless you plan on maintaining a summer home in Canuckistan), especially the more humid parts.

I'm enjoying Germany so far.

Be careful about leaving Canada, though. My mom did thirty years ago or so, and now has an American husband, American kids (though to be fair we're Canadians too), American citizenship (as of a year and a half ago), and an American accent. She also underwent a rather drastic change in political views (I won't say which way to avoid dragging the thread into that).

No, they have "ordinateurs" there, it's a little different. For instance, do you know how they measure RAM there? Not in bytes. They've got "octets". And RAM is MEV (MEmoire Vive). So, if you go to a computer shop and need a laptop with at least 1 GB of RAM, you would say something like "J'ai besoin d'un ordi portable avec au moins un gigaoctet de memoire vive". Now, try to pronounce "un gigaoctet de memoire vive" without tying up your tongue in a slipknot.

Yeah, they've got software but software is called "logiciel". And an OS is a "systeme d'exploitation". They've got more or less the same stuff we have but it's... Different.

Now, we oughta have shotguns for this kind of deal...

Well, before pulling up tent stakes, figure out where you want to go to school, and what for. If you pick a good science, geology, maybe, you can increase your chances for traveling and get someone else to pay for it, which is my favorite way to travel.

If I had my way, I'd be an astronomer stationed in Hawaii or some such place. Look at stars all night and scuba dive all day. But that's just me.

I heard Norway declared 1 mb/s internet access to be a human right for all it's citizens, that sounds like the place to be.

I'd also like to move when I start working, where depends on who I work for. I would like to get a job with NASA or ESA; my Dad used to work with ESOC (ESA) in Darmstadt, and he works with EUMETSAT now. He goes on excursions to many lovely places such as Spain, Austria, Luxembourg, etc...
My Uncle also works for ESA, and lives in a villa in Italy - nice :)

I would most like to live in the USA, but I don't know whether ESA have any operations there.

If you want to live in one big-ass circus then definitely go to the U.S.
If you like commercialism and psychological manipulation by mass media then the U.S. *IS* your only option! +70% of that country's gdp is consumer activity..

I'm currently in Potsdam, New York; we get 80+ inches of snow, a two month summer, and about 7 hours of sun in the winter.

What I would give for a "Mild Winter"...
Potsdam! I have a friend from Potsdam who has no desire to return because of the weather.
