Missing sky with new XP + Orbiter install

I've just reinstalled WinXP on my PC, plus the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon X1950 Pro, DirectX 9.0c and a fresh copy of Orbiter, with no addons.

When I start a scenario at KSC, the sky appears briefly, but then disappears after a few seconds, leaving a view of the clouds and stars. At first I thought it was simply night, but this happens during the day. I've tried playing around with the graphics settings but to no avail. Spacecraft shadows also appear only briefly at the beginning of the scenario. Has anyone else seen this before?

When I had that problem I dropped 3 DLLs in the orbiter root directory to fix my problem.

msvcp71.dll
msvcr71.dll
msvcrtd.dll
