after some searching, ive achieved two things:
i have my hands on a full version of 3dsmax
ive found the problem with my sketchup scaling (an old problem of mine), and it was part of this plugin for 3dsmax

ive been wanting to make some meshes, but scaling is slowing me down, so i have two questions [sort of linked]

1)what unit setup do i use when importing into 3dsmax? ive tried metwes but it seems a little off

2)what is the diameter of a docking port (orbiter scale) for me to check my scaling?

thanks guys

I'm not sure what units are used by Sketch-up but default 3ds Max units are perfect match for orbiter (1 unit in max equals 1 meter in orbiter)

hmm, well after a little play, i found my confusion point, anyway, as it turns out, the problem now lies in Sketchup scaling again, the "meters" template doesnt actually use meters :hmm:

ill have a play around, see if i can make a new template with some 'perfect' geometry imported from 3dsmax

WOO! finally fixed it! it turns out that sketchup doesnt use a set scaling for import and export, so the units need to be set when importing/exporting

TO ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM
when importing/exporting models, go to the Options page of the import/export dialogue and set UNITS to METERS

changing this setting once should save it for good

then you can get back to work with a WORKING scaling system

thanks, and good luck
