Mars500 video diary 13: Martian pizza and other creative cookery

26 August 2011

Our brave marsonauts may face the most monotonous phase of their mission, but they're not bored because they are not boring! Have a look at their inventive cookery to celebrate their one full year in the isolation!

In early June the Mars500 crew celebrated their one full year inside the modules simulating an interplanetary spaceship. They are now flying virtually back to Earth and due to a delay in communications, introduced to make the simulation more real, some material reaches the outside world slowly. As they get nearer to Earth the communications delayed is reduced.

By September the ship will only be be only two months away from the Earth.

ESA's YouTube channel:
The Mars500 crew is only two months from their 'arrival' back on Earth and they can't wait to see the sunlight. To prepare for that and to understand more about how the human brain reacts to variations of day and night and adjusts the sleep-wake cycle, the marsonauts are wearing red glasses andilluminating their modules with blue light. Diego explains about the photopigments in our eyes and and shows how the experiment is done.

ESA: Call for media: Mars500, welcome back to Earth:
10 October 2011

ESA PR 27 2011 Since June last year, the six crewmembers of a simulated mission to Mars have been isolated in a special facility near Moscow. They will ‘arrive back on Earth’ on 4 November and go into quarantine for four days for medical checks. Media are invited to meet the crew at a press conference on 8 November in Moscow.

November 8... The press conference is going to suffer from major double hangover caused by simultaneous celebrations of the return to Earth and the 94th anniversary of Great October Socialist revolution (TM).

Plus Phobos-Grunt launch campaign. Hopefully those who are engaged in it will take precaution not to have hangover on that day...

It is sad that we will eventually have to repeat this "incarceration" experiment with actual Transit habitat hardware.

I hope they have good ventilation in the "space ship", or two years worth of bad gasses are about to be released
