Mission to Mars wasn't the greatest movie, especially because the ending. Despite this, they did a really nice job on producing realistic spacecraft. The homages to Stanley Kubrick are definitely a plus- Mars I (and II) is very similar to Discovery 1 and to the currently released Descartes ship. It's like taking NASA and the Mars design reference mission and 2001: A Space Odyssey in a blender and getting something amazing (a nice space station was in the movie, and makes you wonder why we don't start trying to add a wheel to the ISS). The 2001 space suit helmets were also a nice touch.

Anyway, Mars 1 would be an amazing addon. Just because the movie had it's bad points doesn't mean the production design was (on the ships and technology I mean, and they even predicted transparent led monitors!). I'm not imagining an addon encompassing the entire movie, only Mars I. Maybe, it could be made more realistic with a dock-able landing craft (the front of the ship clearly detaches to become the lander- we never see that directly though). I've included some screenshots of the ship.

Here are some more images. Some of them may be spoilers, but I tried to get as many good shots as I could...

This was already made years ago. Im unsure if it is still on OH or it even works correcty in orbiter 2010. Maybe it can be made to do so.

Thanks

Do you know where it is? Do you have a copy of it?

I should do. A member (kel?) made it for me, complete with animations. It was uploaded shortly after but unsure where.
This was way before i got into modelling. I will have a look and let you know.

Thanks

Im 99% sure it was uploaded to AVsim under the orbiter downloads.

I liked Mission to Mars. The human drama was very good, and the spacecraft was realistic. The only mistake they made is the same one that was made in Shyamalan's "Signs": they showed the aliens:( In a good mystery-type philosophical alien movie, everybody knows you never ever show the aliens!:facts:

And the fact that Tim Robbins didn't know physics. See kids, math may in fact save your life someday.

Guessing he was the one who went too 'far away' in his spacesuit? Yep...that made me cringe.

The vessels themselves were beautiful. I would certainly love to see such things in Orbiter. :)

Red Planet was the other Mars mission movie from 2000. The spacecraft weren't as well designed but the overall story was better. The characters were okay. There's a line from the movie which resembles what you said:

(turn up the volume a bit and wait until the end 'cause he says it kind of softly)

You know, it seems like nobody really talks about Mars as much anymore. In the late 90s and early 2000s everyone was all excited about it, and the Mars rovers were sent up- maybe that was the whole reason. Now, all we ever hear about is the ISS. Not that the ISS is bad, but nobody talks about Mars anymore. Nasa sent up their Mars science laboratory recently. This should be big news! Political crap and other stupid issues are drowning out the voice of space exploration. I just hope that Orbiter isn't the only thing going to Mars in the next couple decades.

If anyone has a link to the addon anywhere, post it! I need to get my Mars mission going! :)

Well, in the meantime there are some other nice vessels, such as this:

My MARS-1 mesh was inspired by the movie and existing add-ons.

I still hope to see these come to life. They're great!

Nice clip I think I would like to have seen more of Chantillis's part, he could have been a very interesting character.

Has anyone found the aformentioned add-on?

Still looking for this? It is over on AVsim,

http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=25496

Registration required even just to look, and I haven't downloaded it myself. It's a 2003 build requiring spacecraft.dll (not spacecraft3.dll, just spacecraft -- and no, spacecraft3 does not include spacecraft(1)).

Thank goodness I still have an AVSIM account. I created it ages ago, and I guess I never used it that much.

Anyway, I'm about to install it and try it out. I'll get back to you guys in 20 minutes.

OK went and got the file, three meshes, no textures

spacecraft030115_021217.zip

Zip contents:
Mars Launcher.scn
Mi-Lander.ini
Mi-Lander.msh
Mi-Launcher.ini
Mi-Launcher.msh
Mi-Main.ini
Mi-Main.msh
Mission to Mars.scn
Read-me-First-2-New-Info.txt
Read-me-First.txt

Hope this helps.

Edit

It's a very low res model, but it seems to be enough for someone to work with if they were inclined to remodel it with textures. There is alot of work to be done, somthing I would not tackle, I have too many pokers in the fire as it is now.

Not quite 20 minutes, I guess.

Anyway, I think this thing needs to be recompiled. K won't start the gravitational rotation, and J won't jettison the lander. As for the "Mars launcher" scenario, increasing the throttle basically blasts the ship out of the solar system. Also, where's the satellite dish and solar panel?

Aside from all that it looks good. I don't want to sound like I'm complaining or anything. I'm just saying I think it could use some more detail. I suppose the source files are lost in time. :)

Edit!

Oh, wait- I forgot about spacecraft.dll

Where can I find that?
