Project Mars Design Reference Mission 1

Yes, hope it doesn't happen in reality! :)

The problem was I had the ERV parked in a circular orbit around Mars when it is supposed to be in a highly elliptical orbit.

Some more progress.

I now have a set of scenarios for the return journey to Canaveral which suggests everything is working ok.

It seems very easy to get to Earth from Mars using IMFD. Much less hassle than from Earth to Mars.

On arrival at Earth the trajectory took me over South America. I used some of the remaining ERV fuel to adjusting the course so it passed over Florida.

A direct re-entry and Canaveral is just possible with the capsule's built in autopilot (I tried it manually at first but couldn't figure out how to do it). The g-levels are too high for crew, about 10g, so maybe I will try aerocapture first and then landing or just leave it as so others can play around and figure it out.

Some screen captures during the journey and tests. The trip from orbit around Mars to Earth was done all in one go. Lots of tests trying to land at Canaveral.

Progress has been a bit slow ... but it looks like I can now generate a version of the addon for testing.

All the scenarios are set-up and all seems to be working. I now have the interesting challenge of extracting all the relevant files from my Orbiter folder to make the addon package.

ok getting there ...

need to write some simple documentation for this test version and need to rename some of the textures so it is easier to remove the addon if required

You could write a pretty easy batch script to uninstall the add-on. Just one that removes all the files of this release.

Have uploaded a version of DRM1 v1.5 onto Orbit Hanger Mods for testing.
[ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=6680"]DRM1 v1.5 test flights[/ame]

I will update it in the new year once I have found and fixed all the bugs. There are many small things that need fixing.

So far, I can say that the HLV autopilots are extremely instable... 4 launches, only one managed to get higher than the tower before "returning to launch site". All flights ended with a sudden yaw right at high rotation speed, as if the guidance had a overflow.

The same happened to the capsule, it also had such a rotation.

All flights started with a vanilla module configuration: Only transx and OrbiterSound.

Interesting ... can't think what it could be. Neither vehicles have any yaw control ... which might be part of the problem. Dunno. I will check it out. Thanks.

Also, the acceleration of the rocket is really low, which could be part of the instability problems... but I would need to check the reference data to check if NASA really designed the launcher with such grave gravity losses. The rocket launched better when I checked with CTRL+I for reading the thrust/mass data

I don't have any problems with the rocket, and I have tons of mods! Also, just a little request, I think it'd be more interesting if there were at least some textures at the landing location.

Ok thanks Nicholander! Good idea about the textures. Will see what I can do.

I have found some kind of bug I think, although I'm not sure (I didn't had the time to test it thoroughly). As soon as the para sails open, the mesh of the capsule starts to flicker (it gets invisible and visible again with a second, for the duration of para sail deployment).
I will try to record it as soon as I'm home from work. I have only tried this on a D3D9 installation.

The para gliding, btw, is really cool. Great work!

Thanks IronRain!

I actually based the parafoil design and deployment on youtube videos of the X-38 drop tests.

Did some quick experimenting with the DRM 1 v1.5 base.

First added the Isidis Highlands mesh as the base and then added a mesh from the Vallis Dao addon on top of that as the landing target area. I may well make my own landing target area if possible. Of course with the new Orbiter things may have to be set up differently.

Isidis Highlands was on AVSIM last time I checked
Vallis Dao is here: [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=1359"]Vallis Dao[/ame]

Here is a list of activities

18.12.14

1. Isidis highlands mesh and texture added
2. DRM 1 base added with local high-res Vallis Dao mesh and texture
3. Module DRM1_HLV.dds removed as not needed

19.12.14

1. Fixed manual parachute deployment
2. Updated EDL scenario files so autopilot is running for habitat lander

21.12.14

1. Tried improving autopilot for habitat but not successful

Greetings from a very cold Finland -15C today ... getting warmer though.

So thought I would give weekly updates so people can keep track of fixes etc even if not much is done.

23.12.14

1. Removed cargowheel_old.dll from modules folder as not needed
2. Fixed the wheel animations for cargowheels although still need to centre animation

29.12.14

1. Laptop is reporting a hard drive error but still limping along. Will need to spend next day or so checking I have all my files backed up in case it needs replacing.

a few things fixed and updated over the last week:

1. Added MAV ascent stage when capsule seperates
2. Added lights to windows of MAV and ERV
3. Adjusted dock port position for ERV
4. Added interior cabin mesh to ERV
5. Animation of parafoil collapse when capsule lands

Last weeks updates and fixes

1. Took a couple of days but managed to get the habitat autopilot working properly. Traced the problem back to the wrong parachute drag area used in the guidance calculations.

2. Added an undocking sound for when the capsule separates from the ascent stage.

3. Computer not fixed yet...will be getting the hard drive replaced soon though.

Have been a bit busy recently with other things so no DRM development recently but hope to pick it up again in the next few days. Not much to do now I think ...

Here are some pics from some testing sessions over the last few weeks.
