SDK Question Manipulating exhaust texture on the fly?

Tried to change colours of exhaust texture first by grabbing its SURFHANDLE and then setting the colour, but this did not work out. Is there any way to do that, perhaps with oapiBitBlt or any other SDK funcs?
 
look at the reentry effects in sdk - it (reentry texture and particle stream) changes colour according to temperature.
 
Tried a few approaches (via Sketchpad, changing colour key, filling the texture), but they were not working. Being a textureless dummy, did one thing I know how to do - changing mesh emission colours for the innards of the nozzles according to the temperature. The default exhaust's colour isn't far off the Balmer emission spectrum of hydrogen, it seems...
