A girl gave birth at my school today and drowned the baby!
http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=6057161
I can't believe it! She doesn't seem like the kind of person that would kill her baby(but might get pregnant) but I'm sure she wouldn't be herself at the time.

And it's the second time to happen in the area within like a week. About a week ago, in Houston(in this area bascially), a 14yr old(so, same age) girl threw her baby in the trash can on a plane. It didn't affect me like today's events though, since today birth and death happened probably only 100 yards from me. The Houston girl had no charges against her because it was stillborn and not viable.

In the case of today, however, the baby must have been alive(but prematurely born I think) since she drowned it.
Any comments or thoughts?

I hope I don't disgust anyone too much. Someone actually did throw up when they found out today.

That's very disturbing, and I'm sure it's even moreso since you knew the person. I have a feeling that you are going to be hearing a long speech from the prinipal fairly soon.

I hope she gets some very good counseling.

I don't really know her very well, but several of my friends do. It was actually her closest friend that found her in the bathroom and went for help.
Although they know that EVERYONE has found out what happened, I don't think the principals will say what happened today. They really tried to keep it quiet. They sent home a letter to parents reassuring them that everything is alright, but it holds no real information about what happened. It merely mentions that a student with a 'medical condition' was taken from the restroom to help.(hospital) The news stations tried to interview several students but I don't think many people, if any, said anything. They might be giving us a talk about preventing pregnancy though.
I just wonder what the hell does it mean "no one knew she was pregnant"?
She just seemed to have gained weight. I don't think anyone could tell or knew that she was pregnant, not even her friends or family.

You may have just answered your own question.

It seems at times there is no limit to human tragedy.

My sympathies to the family.

I had a question?
And I'm sure she won't be feeling well for a long time. She was already depressed when she came to school this morning. Hopefully she won't have to go to jail anytime soon and will just get counciling. If they let the other teenager get away with disposing of her baby, I don't think they should do anything against this girl. They still could do something though, since this one was living.

That's ridiculously awful. Why didn't she use any sort of birth control? And she's only 14! Too many questions! I still wonder why the US has that abstinence-only education, with the high amount of teen pregnancies I'm sure that abstinence-only stuff won't survive much longer. [/rant]

No, I mean, she's been pregnant for nine months. That's impossible not to notice. What kind of parents does she live with, if at all? I just wonder what the hell were they thinking. Cause to me it seems she felt like having silent consent from everyone around her. Like, you're obviously pregnant, and you're obviously not supposed to be pregnant and give birth at 14, so we'll just pretend nothing is happening and let you handle it yourself. You know what you should do.

One of the replies to the article on the ABC website:
You can teach your kids right from wrong until you are blue in the face - if they WANT to go off and have sex, they ARE going to find a way.
I was looking for one of the better replies but can't find it. This one sums it up though. They teach us in school, and I'm sure plenty of parents talk about it too, but often times talk doesn't outweight want.

I don't think her parents knew.(although this is clearly something that I can only guess at) It seemed like just a normal weight gain. It happens. And she might have not acted like she was pregnant and/or just avoided her parents. And although it doesn't make a difference, I don't think she was completely 9 months pregnant. Somewhere close enough to get it out alive though.

9 months doesn't look anything like "normal weight gain" (unless she was totally overweight to begin with). Even 5 months is pretty noticeable. Her parents must have at least suspected something if they cared to see their child at least once during last like half year. Thinking "it can't be pregnancy, not for our daughter" and avoiding awkward conversations, must have been solution of choice for them. In that case, she was indeed her parents' daughter.

That is just crazy. Why would someone fo that?

There is only a few words I can say: Only in America

Sad sad times we live in sometimes this could have happened anywhere, for example a 15 year old killed three people in a house party this week in winnipeg......I am a parent and this always scares me. it is amazing how things have changed in the past 10 years...

I know that countless people that hear about this will be wondering how this is, but it just is. If anyone ever had suspicion about her pregnancy, everyone would have been talking about it in an instant. Now, with her parents, I'm not sure. I don't know her parents and can't tell you what happened there. Your guess is as good as mine, but she didn't seem like a bad kid, and I don't think she has neglectful parents, although they could be foolish.
And I know things may be worse than ever now, but I'd have to argue the tragedies of the present likely happened often in previous generations as well.

Well, you asked for comments or thoughts, so here are mine... I don't think there's much point in trying to figure out what exactly has happened, especially since even you don't have clear picture of what happened, despite being closer to the event than any of us (not to insult or blame you or anything, just pointing out how little hard facts we have on this).

I just hope that parents and their children alike will carry a conclusion out of this, that wishing everything was fine rarely leads to everything being fine, and definitely not in cases like this.

Sad to disappoint you, but America if far from the only place where such crap is happening. It doesn't necessarily make news everywhere, though.

Well in most other countries where this happens, the behavior is usually legal, and expected. ;)

I'm sure he must also be talking about very modern countries that many of us come from. Countries similar to the US in law.
And to add my own little random comment: I will really be disturbed if anyone from my school still gets theirself pregnant after having this happen at school. No one could ever think up something as terrible as this happening. It's a great way to scare people out of 'bad behavior.'
