Despite its namesake, it is a low-to-medium range and endurance spacecraft.

Design Overview:
~14 km/s delta-V for whatever you can do with it:
-Well-planned round trips to Mars/Venus orbit
-Near Earth asteroids
-Asteroid belt?
-Perhaps one-way to Jupiter with refueling for return

~6.5 years of supplies for a crew of 4

Features:
-Uses nuclear thermal rocket with LH2 fuel
-RCS placed on extensions for extra torque
-Nuclear generator instead of solar panels to allow deep space missions
-Extra coolant pumps for responsive thermal management
-Thermal management system tested from Earth to Mars
-Three docking ports for landers, extra laboratory modules, resupply craft, etc.


Design Issues:
-100kW generator is probably a bit too powerful/heavy for this design. (I liked the aesthetics of the truss)
-RCS fuel a bit limited, and the spacecraft is a bit ponderous.
-Underpowered (acceleration around 0.1G)

Flight Notes:
-Try to use small manual bursts of RCS and avoid autopilots for large attitude changes
-Large burn escapes need to be broken into multiple smaller burns Phobos Grunt style
-Need to plan captures well in advance. I recommend IMFD Delta Velocity tool.
-2 low temperature radiators in the front and 2 high temperature radiators in the back. Recommended cooling loops:
1) Command module and habitat module to low temp radiator #1
2) All other room temperature modules to low temp radiator #2
3) Power generator to high temp radiator #1
4) Nuclear thermal engine to high temp radiator #2
-Radiators are all in the same direction. Keep the sun off of your lateral sides.
-External storage modules often require heating

Stability:

The IMS systems seem to be stable up to 1000x time acceleration. I've gotten random MCS overload warnings at higher time accelerations. Even more random - complete station shutdown (non-recoverable).

Recommended IMS system line ups:

1. All Solar Arrays non-heated.
2. The 3 Nuclear Reactors (52kW) are to be offline (they are just back up power).
3. The 1 Reactor (3MW) online.

Add the following in the order listed - the number in parentheses is the number of the item as displayed on the IMS engineering panel cooling tab.

Changes to original design:

I made several changes to the GregBurch's original configuration files for the following modules. It made it more stable and accomplished the operational goals I had for this station.

BM201: CoolingCapacity = 250000

BNG01; PowerOutput = 3000000 and CoolingCapacity = 15000000 and GeneratorEfficiency = 30

BP101: Efficiency = 15

BCFGN_Centrifuge_Core: PowerInput = 52000

BM230: PowerOutput = 52000

Problems:

IMS will not copy the IDS docking data when the scenario is saved. I've included the original data here and it is also in the description block of the scenario:

Insert the following IDS data at the end of the definition block for the space station in the new scenario (right before END).

Robotic Arms:

That add on was designed for Orbiter build 060929 - but it works fine with build 100830, IMO.
Copy and paste the arm definitions below to the ship section of the scenario.
The arms are already defined to attach to the intersection of the spars at the center of the station. The arms were added to the station AFTER the design was finalized in IMS.

Haven't you encountered any probems with URMS yet? If I recall correctly, it is very sensitive to the CoG-shift of the reference vessel.

The reference vessel in this case is a space station. I can't imagine the CoG shifting much.

I've found that if you put more than 1 URMS on a space station, sooner or later 1 of them is going to cause a CTD. Usually happens when you have large numbers of modules/ships in a scenario file. I don't know if it goes away after you integrate.

When I said I encountered problems it was after my Lunar Station had well over 1,200 modules attached to it.

Something that would be really, really useful (and realistic) for IMS:

A gyro-based (reaction wheel or CMG) attitude control module. Something that would consume electricity in exchange for torque, like KSP-style SAS or the CMG on the real ISS.

I'm finding that the tons of cryogenic RCS propellant that I need is a major design constraint. At the same time, I have a freaking 100MW nucear reactor that is sitting mostly idle.

Long story short: it will be made in IMS2. One day.

Which is why I'm looking forward to rebuilding my 7,500 module Lunar Station in IMS2.. because having to add 1,200 RCS thrusters to a space station so that it can rotate to keep the radiators pointing in the right direction is a bit abusive. :)

BTW, After a year's hiatus from building on the Lunar Station, I've decided to build some more of it using IMS1 starting in 2016.. so expect some pictures soon. :)

The IMS systems seem to be stable up to 1000x time acceleration. I've gotten random MCS overload warnings at higher time accelerations. Even more random - complete station shutdown (non-recoverable).

Recommended IMS system line ups:

1. All Solar Arrays non-heated.
2. The 3 Nuclear Reactors (52kW) are to be offline (they are just back up power).
3. The 1 Reactor (3MW) online.

Coolant Loop Assignments:

Add the following in the order listed - the number in parentheses is the number of the item as displayed on the IMS engineering panel cooling tab.

Changes to original design:

I made several changes to the GregBurch's original configuration files for the following modules. It made it more stable and accomplished the operational goals I had for this station.

BM201: CoolingCapacity = 250000

BNG01; PowerOutput = 3000000 and CoolingCapacity = 15000000 and GeneratorEfficiency = 30

BP101: Efficiency = 15

BCFGN_Centrifuge_Core: PowerInput = 52000

BM230: PowerOutput = 52000

Problems:

IMS will not copy the IDS docking data when the scenario is saved. I've included the original data here and it is also in the description block of the scenario:

Insert the following IDS data at the end of the definition block for the space station in the new scenario (right before END).

Robotic Arms:

If you desire robotic manipulator arms to handle cargo, then you also must have the installed add-on by kulch named Universal Remote Manipulator System, release 3.
That add on was designed for Orbiter build 060929 - but it works fine with build 100830, IMO.
Copy and paste the arm definitions below to the ship section of the scenario.
The arms are already defined to attach to the intersection of the spars at the center of the station. The arms were added to the station AFTER the design was finalized in IMS.

Would it be possible to get the pre-assembly scenario or better yet the stack editor session? I didn't make the config file changes, but I saw some design issues:

1) No thrust or RCS
2) Radiators are aligned on all three axis. This guarantees that the sun will always be shining on a radiator (bad). Try to keep the radiators perpendicular to the solar panels.
3) Four 1MW nuclear reactors is excessive. Only one was being utilized, and that was running at ~10% capacity. Perhaps you could cut back to one, and use lighter nodes.

But it certainly LOOKS cool. :cool:

If they're the radiators cooling the reactor, that won't matter. That's a big if, though.

Those are radiators actually build-in into reactor. On a config file level it's a radiator producing electricity. Lots of it.
