If you live in Australia you would know about the government's new idea for the NBN. It is going to set up its own company and build the network its self.

If they do this(50% chance it will happen IMO) then this will be a massive boost to Australia ties to the rest of the world.

Here in Oz everyone has to deal with data limits. The average is about 1Gb per month for a normal ADSL package. That would cost about 20-30 AUD a month and would give you 256kbit speed. It is better than Dial-Up but not by much. In fact a large number of people cannot get ADSL. I know many people who live in a dense populated area, 5kms from the exchange who cannot get it. There are no spare ADSL ports and no one is going to put more in unless there is a demand for it.

If you live in the country even 56k dial up is a chancy thing. Par-Gain allows 2 phone connections on 1 line. Great way of saving money. Can't get ADSL on it though, and Dial up may hit 26kbit if you are lucky.

So then the NBN if commpleted will bring the nation to the economic centre of the world.

Oh and if you see this, get the state or local government to sponser small towns to get at least 1 fibre connection. Worst case is that you can set up a LAN to distribute the connection. These small towns make a college campus look big.

Good luck and Good Hunting
