Hello! I have recently gotten started with orbiter, but i have caught a snare

I will get frame rates around 3-10 (average of 6) on my Computer

my specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo
NVIDIA GeForce 9650m GT w/ 1gb
4gb ram
Vista Home

I have looked around at some of the things and found the Vistaboost DLL. That helped it get for 1 or 2 fps to 3-10 fps. I also found IO's game booster, but that doesnt seem to help.

If you can help me get higher frames in orbiter, that would be very helpful thanks!

What's your graphical setting in Orbiter? You'll find it on the Video Tab.

This is a laptop, I take it?

Does the framerate start okay, and hten get lower after awhile?
Does the fan start spinning at full speed when you start Orbiter?

One of the known issues with Orbiter is that it causes lots of CPU activity, which can heat up the CPU and cause it to be throttled back, resulting in a slowdown in Orbiter. Some have said that getting an external cooler can help with this.

Make sure you don't have any other applications running in the background--check on the task manager to make sure nothing else is loading the CPU.

Also, if you're the technically orientated type, an explanation as to why the performance is poor on Vista can be found here: http://www.orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=7356

it is a lap top (asus N80Vn to be exact.) but for me it seems like the fan is always spinning when i play games

Also it did have fair fps then it would fall off, but now its more consistently low.
I do have the vista fix

My video config in orbiter
Direct 3D HAL (NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT)
Full Screen
1280x800
32bit

hope this helps!

What happens if you turn off the machine, let it sit for an hour, and then turn it back on and start Orbiter as soon as everything finishes loading? Is it consistently low, or does it start fast and fall off?

Do you have an option for Direct3D T&L HAL? If so, pick that one (and make sure "Always Enumerate Devices" is checked)

I just tried that (i did have Direct3D T&L HAL) and it did fall off.
It started ~45, then went to ~8....

It's likely then that it's a heating issue.

You may want to try the Orbiter 2009 Beta with the OGLA rendering client, as that reduces the load on the CPU. My laptop had very similar issues to yours, and using OGLA it was up around 60fps constantly. There are still some issues with it, but for most things it still works.

Alternately, you may want to pick up a laptop cooling pad and see if that helps.

Maybe you have some sort of graphics settings like Anti-Aliasing on?
