Recently I stumbled on two programs called Einstein@home and SETI@home.
You're probably familiar with SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), if not, you can read more about it on the wiki page here.
Basically, since lately SETI has been mostly privately funded, they don't have the resources to build their own supercomputer or buy CPU time, so they're using a program to break up the data that needs to get processed into small chunks and sends them to 1000's of computers at home, which can then process that data when sitting idle. The project is called SETI@home.
Einstein@home is in a similar situation, just that the project is looking for gravitational waves that have been predicted by Einstein's theory or relativity, but not yet discovered.
There are dozzens more projects that also use the same platform to get results without needing a supercomputer.

Here is the website for Einstein@home. If you're willing to donate your idle CPU time when you're at work, or during the night or just browsing the net or watching movies, the website will lead you through downloading and installing BOINC, which is the program that does the job and also contains a good FAQ section.
Because I use my computer as an alarm clock, it needs to stay online during the night. So I decided it would be best to get it to do something. Hopefully some of you will join the effort
