Earth Hour

Interesting idea, but one hour is not going to change anything. After that hour is up, everyone will just turn their lights back on and continue to use electricity as they did before.

If everyone around the world would do it, that would be lots of saved energy.

The whole point of Earth hour is to change that kind of attitude.Doing a little bit is better than doing nothing. In fact something has already changed, my young daughters are more interested in conservation and the reasons behind it. So yeah my power will be off for one hour.

As fresh_Squid said, this is more of a symbolic thing to raise awareness. But also if a large number of people turn off their power for an hour, it will add up to a large number.

Nothing can change as long as the dominant mantra is "It's just the way it is."

My counter, "It didn't used to be."

My eldest was born on Earth Day. She seems to embody the spirit. The lights in our house are never on unless there's someone actually using them.

Historically, the energy crises in the '70's actually did result in large changes of personal practice and conservation. Look it up. It didn't help that the first thing Reagan did upon entering the White House was to tear Carter's solar panels off the roof.

Exactly.

Don't forget the high-powered arc lamp spotlights to counteract the reduced light pollution! ;)

Yes, and noise pollution, too. Big speakers. Made from soon-to-be-extinct South American rain forest timber. The rest of the batch is in my fireplace.

I tried that once, but my toilet got clogged from all the eco propaganda I shoved down it.

Yeah, it's been snowing daily in the last town I lived in Washington state for nearly a week now. So much for global warming, huh?

I'm thinking if we could just get the population of the whole world on one spot of the globe the offset weight would send the world wobbling in a different orbit....thereby, um...solving global warming or is it global cooling this week. Well, whatever my boss wants me to say it is....is it friday yet?

I think that's why "climate change" is the preferred terminology ;)
