Out by a day, but such is life.

2018 was the 50th anniversary of a UK BBC sit-com. Called "Dad's Army". It was devised around the formation of a military force made up of men too young and old for conscription.

Was a popular programme, and of its day.

One of its best episode was "The deadly attachment". The plot isn't too important, the platoon has to guard a captured U-Boat crew. It does have some of the best one-liners, and a UK actor that probably isn't known outside.

His name is Philip Madoc, sadly gone, did a lot of tv, and usually played a sem-heavy/villan. Shows he does a good comedy act here.

One thing that has always intrigued me is how good is his German accent?

Action starts at 11:24, German at 14:10 and 14:55.

Well, with absolutely no sense of humour his accent would not be too good ;)
The Captain speaks german quite goot, with some british accent.
Looks like you showed me some really good comedy - I love when they place their orders for fish & chips. The chips not too soggy

Edit: Probably the accent of the german officer is more russian than british

The dialogue "Don't tell him Pike!" is a bit of a classic here, up there with "Fork-Handles" *

The end of the scene is one of my favourites. None of them play it for laughs.
Private Walker( a Spiv/wide-boy/bit of a chancer), is the ideal character to take the order.

Where he takes the Captain over to check the order, then Captain Mannering sees what's going on...comedy genius.

*Four-Candles:

A two hander built around English pronunciation.

Regrettably "fork handle" is the only thing I can understand there :p

Yes, sadly it gets more daft as it goes on. The bathroom plug, 13A punch line, and hose, hose and hose, well more esoteric. The same in any language regarding humour I would think.

The good news is, if you are anywhere in England and say Four Candles, you will usually get a laugh!

Shame Ronnie Barker wasn't still around to do it.

Replacing a 'giant' like him and still come over as natural is indeed rare, but IMHO they got as close as you can with this one. :tiphat:

Apologies for dragging up an old item, just wasn't aware of the US only? phenomenon of watching and commenting on tv programs. Came across it while looking for old US tv progs.

This couple have a go at #3 above.

Apologies for dredging up an old thread, but I read recently that what the U-boat Captain is telling his crew is not what Captain Mannering is saying?
More of a warning to them that he will look for an opportunity to escape?

Dialogue at 14:10 in #1 above.
you have to drag the time-bar in the picture area.

My german is a bit "rusty", but I get: "When I pretend to have stomach pains, watch out. (get ready?)"

Thank you, that makes sense in context of later action.

With the WWII anniversaries, this episode was in the news and mentioned this dialogue. Never thought much of it, just a bit of timewasting till the next action.
Makes more sense now.

Thanks, G.
