I don't know how well known he might have been outside Latin America. I for one grew up watching his comedy shows between 1974 to 1985 which are constantly re-run to date, and were so popular that the cracks and phrases have literally become part of the vernacular of the region.

RIP, Chespirito.

Most people I know from 15 to 40 years old are paying homages and mourning his death. He was a genius who understood Latin America's culture, contradictions, problems and qualities very well and transcribed the soul of the subcontinent into his comedy shows.

El Chapulín Colorado and El Chavo del Ocho were recorded in the seventies, but they are still being broadcasted daily in Brazil - with high audience levels.
