3 could be a blade, but the part that broke off of 4. (i just doubt it) And, i'm having a hard time understanding the close up picture from the other angle. It looks very different, something is embedded in the ground, and the rotor seems like it's on the other side now.

The wreck is not in the same place that it was in the first picture, they'ved flipped it over which is why the rotor seems to have swapped sides.

according to the rules of perspective, the two clearly visible notches in the new picture are definitely at an angle of much less than 90 degrees. One thing that is misleading about a circle in perspective is that the "highest" and "lowest" edges of the ellipse are quite a bit forward to the eye and NOT located at what would appear to the middle point between the "front and back" of the circle. the way to find the TRUE center of the circle is with the diagonals of a trapezoid (square in perspective) that circumscribes the circle at 4 right angled tangents.

In the first picture the rotors seem to be linearly arranged. This is either damage or an illusion because the intersection with the other rotor would not cross(area B) anywhere near the center line (area A) of the circle .

The blades should not appear to go through the point you mark as the center. The blades are behind the "cap", so you can't go by the cap's apparent center.

its not going by the caps apparent center, it is going by the center line of the outer ellipse which happens to line up with the center of the cap in this view. anyways, the only way the whole outer disc assembly could be where it is compared to the blades is if it were falling off and hanging

[• Photos from Abbottabad show that the chopper had a five-bladed tail rotor. "On a conventional Black Hawk, you have four blades. The addition of the extra rotor blades on the tail rotor hub reduces the acoustic signature of the helicopter there by making it hard to hear, giving the SEALs that extra few minutes to get over the compound before anyone on the ground quite knows what's going on," according to Jennings.]

"Specifically, the tail rotor of the crashed helicopter has a five-bladed assembly, whereas the Black Hawk tail rotor has four blades. Also, where the Black Hawk's vertical tail section tapers towards the top, the helicopter lost in the raid has a vertical tailplane than has an even chord from top to bottom capped off with what appears to be a large aerodynamic surface."

Okay, let's pretend CNN has more insight from the same pictures. What did the twitter guy hear? Different helicopter? Or was he just that close? (serious question; I don't particularly care who's right about the blades)

Sad truth of the matter is that you will never be able to sneak up on someone in a helicopter. even if you were to reduce an h60's acoustic signature by 50% we're still well over 100 decibles.

The real objective is not to make the helicopter silent but to disguise the sound so that by the time your target realises what is happening, you are already overhead.

I can't tell you how many times I've been woken up by a Blackhawk at 3-5 in the morning. They're definitely not quiet.

Some of the articles I read said that the main goal was merely to make the direction from which the helicopter is approaching to be confusing for the few moments before it gets you and hard to use instruments for detection

They say it was a mechanical failure.
RPGs tend to cause mechanical failures.
