Just had an interesting chat with a friend, He thinks Europe as a group of composers(20th Century) has far more quality than the UK.

I could only think of Holst, Britten, Elgar ...I lost.

It had been a long day....

Among the british composers I also love Ralph Vaughan Williams, especially symphonies No. 6 and 7 and the great "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis"

One would expect more European composers based on population figures alone. Quick google would suggest a 9:1 going by 1875 figures all things being equal.

England has got Steve Harris.

To that list I'll add Malcom Arnold, and his rather interesting 8th Symphony

And the wonderful 3rd Symphony of Vaughn Williams teacher, Anglo-Irish composer, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford.

Peter Racine Fricker

William Wordsworth

When I first heard this work of madness many years ago on radio it was quite impressing

John Veal, here represented by the first work he composed after abandoning composition due to being 'frozen out' by the so-called avant-guarde in the 1960s.

The prototype of a classic Steve Harris composition:

I'm a fan of Haydn and Mozart myself. Both can be equally serious and whimsical. Corelli and Boccerini are also pretty excellent

One of my (current) favorite pieces:

Henry Purcell should be first on the list of British composers, IMHO.

But being an baroque opera nerd, I may be biased.
