I walk by a shrink wrapped Lunar Dragon everyday here at Space X. there is talk of doing a Lunar Dragon with fuel tanks in the SM and using the Super Draco's. I'm sure you still would need a rocket stage like the one you did to do most of the landing burn then drop off and the Draco's would take over and landing legs fold down

The design of the upper stage resembles the Fregat used by the Soyuz-2 rocket. Amazing!

A propulsive upper stage is probably the better solution, as it will use hypergolic fuel and will not be affected by boil-off effects.

I calculated the tanks sizes based on the Dragon mass and dV's required and came up with sizes strikingly close to the Russian Fregat upper stage. I think the Fregat is a very useful and versatile space hardware, so I modeled the SPS close to the Fregat's design. :)

Glad if you like it! As N_Molson wrote, man-rating the FalconHeavy is not required, as the crew launch is on a Falcon 9. Only the upper stage will have contact to the Dragon, and this stage is technically - as far as I know - identical to the Falcon 9 upper stage.

Still a lot of teaking would be required. For example the Dragon's docking port need to withstand the acceleration load during the upper stage burns. The scenarios were made to see if Zubrin's theory is plausible. Orbiter is a great tool simulate such missions.
For some reason I was having fun, and decided to attach the SPS thing, onto dragon itself (using the trunk). Well, let's just say it didn't go well. Anybody got any ideas. Here's my scn thing at the moment.

EDIT: I really liked the mod, the only reason why I'm doing this is just for fun.

Code:
BEGIN_DESC
Double launch of a Falcon9 with a Dragon capsule and an empty FalconHeavy from the Cape.
Press 'V' to activate the Falcon9.

The FalconHeavy will follow on autopilot a minute later.

When in orbit use the Falcon9's second stage to align orbit inclination with the FalconHeavy and synchronize orbits until docking.

When in orbit briefly switch to FaclonHeavy and jettison the payload. It will automatically re-dock to the stage, now being ready for docking of the Dragon.

Yet another @DDASSSSS problem. You should properly check the "Doc" folder, since there's a workaround of a known bug.

Forgot to add a screen shoot of what the issue looks like so here it is. The SPS is sticking out and the engine is not facing the right direction basically.

How would putting a Dragon on a Falcon Heavy and filling the trunk with fuel work? According to SX FH can deliver 16t to escape velocity. Given 7t for the dragon and trunk there's 9t for fuel in the trunk. Use the existing Dragon thrusters. I think that FH could get that lot to TLI, That gives a dV of about 2.5 km/s for LOI and TEI. Should be enough. Could be what @barrygolden was thinking of.

The Dragon capsule has 3 attachment points in the trunk (left, right, center).
To have a payload centered, the correct attachment point (2) shall be used:

SPS:Artemis8\SPS
..
ATTACHED 0:2,Dragon
...
END

But, as shown in the screenshot, the SPS is not designed to fit inside the trunk, it is too big and upside down.
____

To have a propulsion package inside the trunk, I played around with "Trunky", a tank and engine pallet in the trunk.
It would provide independent propulsion, using 2 redundant thrusters and its own fuel supply.
In case of a flight abort it would be jettisoned right away, not to hamper the escape of the Dragon.
However, as this would require launching on a man-rated FalconHeavy, I did not further follow-up this design.

For some reason the "Trunky" idea seems cool, any ideas on how to do it.

I have done exactly that, however with the older dragon2 addon. I have used it for lunar missions, a Venus flyby, and a mission to asteroid 2000 SG344.

as this would require launching on a man-rated FalconHeavy
Couldn't be any worse than a Saturn V with 7.6 million pounds of thrust, right?
Gemini-Titan missions experienced bad pogo on the first stage, and 8+ Gs at cutoff.

I think you are own to somthing. I really like the idea of using the Dragon Like the Apollo CSM ... Would be nice to see the Dragon. it would be okay to have the small tanks stiking out of the sides a little
