Question Animal tracks ID.

Any of the wildlife experts here recognise these tracks in the snow? They appeared overnight. There are wild rabbits here in rural Northern England, but they don't look like the ones they normally leave.

Fox?

No, looks like a rabbit track (hopping movement). Foxes move much like dogs and leave a different track.

Shame, I was hoping for something exotic, bear, wilderbeast, aardvark.
Must be a big rabbit, they are a lot bigger than the ones we normally see. Might be a were-rabbit?

They are clearly NOT rabbit footprints, Urwumpe. From various parameters, I can safely determine that these are dinosaur footprints, thus proving that dinosaurs are still alive, and that the Earth was created 6000 years ago.

:P

*CRACKPOT ALERT* *CRACKPOT ALERT*

Well, it is not the typical rabbit track you see in most simple books - usually you see the tracks of a rabbit running fast, in that case the rabbit places one foreleg in front of the other, while the hindlegs stay parallel.

But this track fits to a rabbit hopping slowly in cold weather. The only alternative would be Siamese twin dwarf kangaroos.

"Siamese twin dwarf kangaroos. " Thats it, one of our neighbours is Australian, they must have escaped! Best rush around there immediately, and let them know.

Squirel? now thats interesting. Our native Red Squirel is losing out to the imported Grey Squirel. This area is one of a few where "the Reds" are holding on. I last saw one in the garden a few years ago, but they are still in a nearby wood.

I'll take another shot with a ruler!

A Muskrat? We have quite a few here, in the river next to the garden. They are far less annoying as the wild boars. Luckily our dogs learned to stop 20m away when the target is not running away after barking.

The probe collided two sattelites so that the debris would make those tracks.
Your faith is beeing tested!

Don't think Muskrat are indigenous to the UK, didn't know they were in Germany! Maybe if some escaped from a collector?

Hare's we have, I've never seen them around here though. The weather has been rough here for animals, it hasn't thawed for nearly two weeks, which is unusual. Snow only lasts a few days, then we get rain mostly during the winter.
the birds are coming close to the house for food now, even the Rooks, who are normally very suspicous.

I think the Kangaroo is favourite at the moment, my neighbours aren't answering the door, but I know they are in. Maybe I shouldn't have shouted my question through the letter-box?

Maybe you also had been visited by an owl. Did you check your mail lately?

A wallaby would be closer in size:

But there is something missing, I think perhaps it has had its tail docked also:

Best report your neighbours to the RSPCA, just in case ;)
