Britain Tops Australia in gold medals.

I should ban you for this... :) But I won't, at least not yet

Well I'm a Brit living in Australia - I'll decide who I'm supporting at a later date.

My favorite events in the Olympics is running and boxing. But boxing is always on telemundo. Strange.... But anyways, China has been doing really well in every event. Congrats to them.

 What? The Poms accusing Aussies of whinging? The world really has gone mad! :P

We got our only non water-based gold medal the other day in the pole vault - our first male track-and-field gold in 60 years! Even pole vaulting has its origins in jumping over water

SOmewhere I read a good point: if you add up the gold medals won not by Russia and all the former Soviet states together, than the USSR still wins big.

True, but it's funny to stir up trouble among those who keep close track of the "medal count", which I find a bit bizarre. Nobody is supposed to "win the Olympics", you just compete event by event and you're supposed to have fun along the way.

I can't remember where I saw it, if I find it I will post it up. But it was a "medals per capita" table. I think the Bahamas were on top and Australia was 4th, New Zealand was 7th. I think its a nicer perspective.

Here is a graph showing what I mean:

I agree. The Olympic Games are my favorite two weeks every few years because of the international friendship and spirit displayed. I don't care about medal count or whatnot, though I support my athletes and cheer when they do well. I think the greatest part of the Games, though, is watching athletes from all over the world come to compete in a common Games, to learn from each other, and foster a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood without borders. I heard a story of a Russian athlete and a Georgian athlete who performed well in an event; at the medal ceremony they congratulated each other and hugged. That right there is the spirit of the Olympics, and that's why I like watching them.
