I like the idea in a way because current systems are becoming so clogged anyway.
But I fear of what this is going to lead to which could be people make like Cnn.comm filled with spyware and ads and crap like that to harm people who press the m t v or g keys one too many times.
The only thing which gets clogged is my spam folder. I mean honestly, we already have dozens of generic TLDs, which are not really used.
Like .name or .info
The problem will get solved, when market finally kicks in - when you want to own Orbiter-forum.com and can make Tex an offer, he can't refuse... why should you have to register Zachstars-Orbiter-Forum.com or Orbiter-Forum.org or Orbiter-Forum.info or Orbiter-Forum.us or Orbiter-Forum.net or...
Also, why should each small unimportant family have their own domain? I know that many webspace providers sell domains for cheap, but what speaks against many families of the name Smith organizing themselves under the common domain smith.name. Williamsmith.name will still be no problem for the guy who appears in movies.
pizza.com just got soled (2 months ago) for 2.5 milion dollars and there is estimated that 99% of the .com domain names are parked. My opinion is that it got stupid since the .com era. We need a more relaxed DNS, fingers crossed.
However, this will affect the marketing and people's trust in certain websites.
No, why? If Pizza.com can be registered, and somebody wants to pay 2.5 million, why should you change the system? If the domain would not be worth the money, they would not pay it. It is not like it can get used for blackmailing.
I have been running name servers that serve .COM and .NET and been running at least one root server for the last 11 years now. It pains me to not be able to speak my mind about this subject. You all may confuse my opinions with my employer's.
