About those photos, have in mind that some are flipped.
Here's proper orientation and some idea of the camera angle for MA-4:

On MA-5 the camera looked in the same direction as the astronaut:

I've now updated the Orbithangar files to version 2.1.1, which fixes the non-disappearing Atlas mesh after capsule separation.

Optionally, if you already have v2.1, and don't want to download the 50 MB, you can extract the DLL attached to this post into the Modules\ProjectMercury folder.

I got a CTD with the new module (2010 version). Is it something in the scenario lines?

That's very strange. It shouldn't crash at that point.

Have you edited the Config\Vessels\ProjectMercury\ProjectMercuryAtlas.cfg file? If so, can you share the contents?
Can you try reinstalling the addon from the zip file? If you have edited other files and therefore don't want to overwrite them all, at least unzip the Configs, Textures\ProjectMercury\Skins, and Modules.

Thanks again for all the effort that went into this beautiful addon.

One thing I've noticed though: Shouldn't the launch be "heads down"?
I mean, shouldn't the booster be rotated 180° so that the Capsule is placing the Astronauts heads down when pitching?
I'm sure this was the case for Shuttle, Apollo and Gemini. Even DM-2 did it this way...and I believe it was the same on Mercury. Though I have no references to quote here ;)

During one of the CBS mission coverages with Walter Cronkite and Mercury Astronaut Wally Schirra, Wally mentioned that during Mercury they went into orbit heads up, on Gemini they were on their side, and on Apollo they were finally heads down.

hmm i decided to take a flight with mercury atlas today and realized that the mesh seems to be a little messed up here, though if i reload the scenario it fixes it so that is what i will do right now while you try to figure out what caused this

Which version are you using, v2.1 or v2.1.1? An easy way to find out is to check the Orbiter.log after running a scenario.

It should read
Code:
000000.000: Module ProjectMercuryAtlas.dll [Build 200610, API 160828]
If the build date string is earlier (v2.1 I believe is 200608), then you should update to the latest version.

If you are on v2.1, you may update by using the file(s) in this post. If you're on any previous version, then use the files found on Orbithangar.

If you are already on v2.1.1, then let me know, and I'll look into it.

I don't have the Haynes "manual".
But as for my own references on this project, most of them are listed in the References chapter of the add on documents (Docs\Addons\Project Mercury X\Project Mercury X manual.pdf).

Some highlights are
  • This New Ocean. Roughly 1000 pages, so if you want the "important" parts, look at part 3, which covers the manned flights.
  • NTRS document 19630012071. Report about the final Mercury mission (MA-9), and also a general summary of the manned Atlas missions.
  • NTRS document 19670028606. Summary of the manned Redstone missions.

These are (especially the last two) technical dense and highly detailed. For a more general reading and information about Project Mercury, I've found the Wikipedia page for each mission to be helpful.

For a super-detailed read, the Mercury Familiarization Manual and Flight Ops manual are some goldmines.

I suggest downloading my older Mercury 5.0 release and grab the familiarization guide out of it as a starting point. Use that as a starting point to the original documentation.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mscorbaddon/project_mercury_050116.zip?download

The original familiarization guides are the most approachable out of the material from nasa. There are nasa manuals that require a technical background but the familiarization guides are written as a detailed but general purpose overview of the capsule and its various subsystems.

Hi
thanks for this great addon
I have one small problem tho...
during the launch I don't have ANY tower, just rocket and ship standing there.
Looks funny but it works anyway, just kills all the launching immersion.
What did I miss ? Some Titans or what. I have ...some, but maybe not all :uhh:

Sorry @gamer19 , I totally missed your post. Both the 2010 and 2016 version should have the Launch Complex (and the files are not flipped in my web browser, although they were in a previous upload).
There are also no required addons for the default scenarios, everything should be included.

Which scenario are you running? Does this occur for every scenario? And could you upload your Orbiter.log after running such a scenario? Either upload the file here (drag-and-drop), or post its contents inside the CODE tags you get by pressing the Insert button (ellipsis ...), and selecting Code (</>).

Today, on the 60th anniversary of the first launch attempt of Freedom 7, I've updated the addon to version 3.0.
New features include:
  • Completely reworked and accurate recreation of the capsule attitude control system (including ASCS, RSCS, etc.). (for usage and detailed description of modes, see the Doc\Addons\Project Mercury X\Project Mercury X attitude control.pdf)
  • With the new attitude control, the cockpit panel is also slightly improved, adding the relevant switches and T-handles.
  • Added sound, so that you can hear the "Go for at least 7 orbits", 0.05 G time, retrocount, and more.
  • Added the famous "fireflies", which now appear if you tap the window during sunrise.
  • Fixed the camera positions for the gantry in internal view for LC-5.
  • Swapped longitude and latitude in the selection of landing base (press B while in orbit).
  • Improved landing prediction for base slightly.

As usual, you get the latest copy at Orbithangar.
Skjermbilde 2021-05-02 10.38.00.png

The May 2nd launch attempt of Freedom 7 was canceled at T-2 hours due to weather. Shepard finally lifted off on May 5th 1961.

Please check the movement of the clock. Since update 3 the second hand is behaving strangely. It moves forward till 60 seconds but then it doesn´t move on to 1 second. Instead the counter moves all the way back - that is counterclockwise - to the 3 second mark.

BUT:
This is an absolutely superb addon!!!

Is it possible to modify the height over ground of a launch pad?

I was trying to flatten the area around LC-5 but couldn't put the launch complex on the ground.
