Did I mention yet that I feel discontent with the lack of political and economic aid by my government towards other EU members? We are all suffering from COVID-19 and even if we would get a 30% hit to the economy this year, we would still be much better off than all others. Even better off, if they would have been spared from COVID-19.

I can understand why Eurobonds are a bad idea. But that is no reason to not offer a much better way to get lots of money to where it is needed. We have a EU for making sure the European economy runs well in ALL countries. Not just Germany and France. We should use it.

The EU's top scientist has resigned and criticised the bloc's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Professor Mauro Ferrari, president of the European Research Council, said he was "extremely disappointed by the European response to Covid-19".
The Professor had only been in post at the helm of the EU's main scientific body since 1 January, where he was due to serve a four-year term.

Interesting, just been an item on BBC News effectively contradicting the Prof's statement and that he was about to be asked to resign.

EU is a very complex subject. Countries have reduced it down to money, finance and regulations. Not country A or B, all of them...

The rest of the European Construction (the European Citizenship part) is just good intentions and propaganda.
In the field there's nothing, it's individual countries as always (ex: you need a national car license plate, unless it's a short visit)

That's why you saw workers and students returning to their countries within the EU, as soon as this started.
If there was a common European Citizenship with rights (including health assistance), people would remain.
But people realized that they had no protection; only their own countries would take care of them...

It's quite sad that it came to this, the original EU project was very positive...

Our political leaders have decided to slowly get the wheels going again. The number of active cases have been decreasing for a while.

The first ones to slowly get going are childcare and up to 3'rd grade. (~8 yr. old) The institutions will open but attendance is voluntary. The individual institutions will be deciding on how they organize the work based on their circumstances.

A corona advisory team has been set up for anyone that needs input from a medical angle on how to manage their workplace. I do hope we can avoid the over-the-top draconian limitations that we have some anecdotal evidence for in our neighbouring countries. Balancing safety and liberty is a very hard job, and you WILL get some flak no matter what you decide.

The situation is still very fluid, and the experience/opinion ratio is still extremely low. The advantage of a tiny society like ours is that we can react much faster and with greater effect. We do indeed live in interesting times.

It was some dude selling stuff off the tailgate of his truck. Not sure how they can catch him with anything unless he was retailing masks and sanitizer before this and they can prove that he's jacked up his prices. He probably hoarded a bunch of stuff when this all started and now he can't return it.

For my sanity, I have to triage when I go full justice Don Quixote. I'll expend the effort when there is half a chance of anything useful getting done, but if not I shrug my shoulders and move on. Not worth getting my blood pressure up over it.

The IHME modelling says we are still narrowing in on peak resource usage https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections. The growth curve does appear to be hitting the logarithmic apex (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/). What it looks like is that we are hitting a plateau. I think that's why the Surgeon General described it as, "Our Pearl Harbor". While we aren't in the most grim situation possible, we're still losing more than 1,000 people every day and will be for some time. We're still not at point where discharges are outpacing new cases so each day we're adding stress to the hospital system.

Just coming back to this to comment on how the IHME model is looking. When you first posted this, it was saying 10 days, with a projection of about 3k deaths per day at peak, IIRC, and 80k total by August.

It's now projecting a peak at three days out (so six days total from time that the original projection I saw was made), with about 2k deaths per day, and 60k by August. Meanwhile, my estimate before you posted this, based on China/SK data, was 40k deaths by the end of things, with no real projection ontiming of the peak (though I did think it would be "soon"). Looking at the data from the past couple days, I'm a fair bit more pessimistic, so I'd say the 60k figure is likely right, maybe even somewhat low.

The Bundesrat has announced that they will begin slowly loosening social distancing measures at the end of April... No comment yet on what exactly that means, they don't quite know themselves yet. I hope the kids can go back to school, though. Months locked up with an 8yo with downs syndrome is a deathtrap. I'm not sure yet for *whom*, but it is bound to be fatal for one of us... :shifty:

Mysticism and xenophobia... People always revert to that in times of crisis. Even some educated ones. Because accepting you've lost control is very frightening.
