Coming Back to Orbiter.......

I've not used Orbiter for a while - I think the last version I used was the 2005 release. CUtting a long story short.....I decided I would like to fly it again.

Two questions really....

1
As I've long since slipped out of using Oribiter... I've lost rack of addons I should download. Currently I Have:
•Base Package + All High Level textures from Martins site.
•Orbiter Sound
•DGIV
I'm after any recomendations for other addons.. by they ship, scenery, textures, general mods...etc..

I've spent this evening playing with the new (well new to me) DGIV. I fancy flying an Appollo Mission or two. Last time I used orbiter I had (I think) NASSP - which I thought was pretty good. NASSP seems to come in two flavours - a 'live/dev' version and a stable version. If I go for NASSP which shoudl I go for?? NASSP still seems to be going however I've come across AMSO - what is the difference? Which is better (in terms of realism, graphichs, stability etc....). In my personal opion I prefere complex sims with checklists procedures etc..... (I also like a stable sim).

TSPenguin's right - the "essential add ons" is a great place to start.

Regarding your NASSP vs. AMSO question, keep your eyes on this recent thread: http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=1074

In terms of other add-ons, have a look at the Developers Support Forums here to see what's available from the local crew, and browse Orbit Hanger specifically for add-ons that you're really interested in - ships, stations, MFD's, bases, etc.

I too am back into Orbiter after a long hiatus (2, 3 years?). I was going to start a thread to ask some questions but I'll just add mine here to try to keep the "returning Orbiteers" info in one spot.

First off, the "Essential Addons" thread is great. Thanks for that.

Also good to see Orbit Hanger still up and running strong and just about everything one needs is there.

Also good to see NASSP still being developed and it's great that AMSO is back and better than ever.

And I see Shuttle improvement addons are still getting better all the time.

As for questions, here goes:

Does estars Mercury and Gemini addons still function in the latest Orbiter release?

What is the status of fancisdrakes CEV? The Ares add ons, any updates in the last couple of years? An Ares V available yet? An Altair lunar lander?

What is the latest in Soviet/Russian space program addons? ESA addons?

Latest news there: http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=1043

There is a new N1 project and some demands for Soyuz VCs, but no new other project except October Sky. The french community did many european add-ons, you should watch mustards site for them, as they are rarely also uploaded to Orbithangar.

Thanks Dennis, seems francisdrake has just started back to work on the CEV. Maybe he knew I was back? LOL

I saw mustards site a day or so ago while surfing orbiter related sites, marked it for more detailed review later. Lot's of "stuff" to catch up on!

And don't forget the next release of Space Shuttle Ultra on your list. ;)

*shameless self-advert*

I'm not a huge fan of flying the shuttle in orbiter, though I do like landing the thing, but Space Ship Ultra is on my list if for no other reason than it looks like such a great deal of work went into the add on.

Energia is another "must have" for you, I think.

Great payload manager, great autopilot...

Thanks for posting this thread!

I, too, have been away from Orbiter (but not the Forums) for a few years, since I had to ditch my PC and return to being an exclusive Mac user.

Last night I finally got up the courage to attend a meeting of the LASFS, and was in hog heaven! I got to meet Jerry Pournelle! (Would've gotten to meet Larry Niven, but he was off camping, I think.)

Anyway, as I was being given the tour of the Clubhouse, we came upon the Computer Room, which consists of four networked PCs (none connected to the Net), usually used for gaming. I asked if anybody had heard of Orbiter, but while nobody had, their eyes widened with interest as I started to describe it. I instantly thought, "Awww, man! This group would go nuts over Orbiter!"

Since none of those computers are connected to the Net, I'll need to burn a CD with all the pertinent files. I want to get as much great stuff as possible crammed on there, so that I don't have to make multiple trips.

Off to consult the "Essential Addons" thread now...
