World champion Lewis Hamilton will begin his 2015 title defence from pole position after comfortably eclipsing Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg in Saturday's qualifying session in Australia.

The Silver Arrows dominated as expected, but it was incredibly close behind them as Williams, Ferrari and Red Bull vied for position. Felipe Massa ultimately won the battle to be best of the rest, the Williams man just edging Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel for third.

Q1 was dominated by the Mercedes, with Hamilton fastest on 1m 28.586s from Rosberg on 1m 28.906s, both on the medium tyres. Massa got closest with 1m 29.246s on the softs.

Renault really needs to up its game. I hear Red Bull has purchased the power unit IP from Renault and is planning to take power unit construction in-house because they're so displeased with Renault's efforts. McLaren/Honda is having a start like Red Bull did last year!!

Not an unexpected result for McLaren/Honda considering that they have very few testing miles, so long as they improve relative to the other teams over the next races they will be doing what is expected of them.

Renault really needs kicking for braking there own engine, how many failed Renault engines during the race weekend, five (one unrepairable) was my count...

Very impressive first race for the Spanish young pilot Carlos Sainz Jr.

The problem is that they cant improve much on the engine given the current regulations. Small changes are allowed depending on how much development credits the other 3 manufacturers have left over for in season changes. Hopefully the issues are not fundamental.
