Aren't the "classic" games based on war fighting skills anyway?
All the track and field events, archery, shooting, wrestling (not rasslin'), the marathon (not so much 'war fighting' but has a historical significance), biathlon, etc.
There are some events that I wonder about (curling? some hot chicks throw rocks), bowling, ping-pong? badminton? There are others...
But some are just freakin' cool; long jump, skeleton, all the downhill stuff (speed skiing was pretty awesome but I think it got relegated to a demo sport, then removed).

BUT! I don't think professionals should participate, except maybe as announcers.

The difference between professional and a amateur is pretty small anyway in terms of training and conditions, the only difference is that an amateur has to finance his logistics himself, while the professionals are getting millions from the tax payer. I remember the noise that resulted after the abysmal performance of the German bobsled team in Sochi - and especially the costs, that are needed for a professional bobsled team. The bobsled for Sochi had alone 900,000 € R&D costs and failed epically.

Kiddo got her job offer! $60K per year starting salary, almost as much vacation time as I have, plus a crapton of other perks!

:woohoo:

Now my salary can go towards early retirement instead of tuition (rent, food, textbooks, food, transportation, food, and probably booze). Any idea how much food a young adult can consume??? Booze at that age is generally cheap, as a person ages (generally) so does the quality of alcohol.

Ain't that a :censored: lot! If that's her first job, then either it's a great career path or money is really cheap on your continent.
In any case, pass her the congrats! :)

Comfortable minimum? $1000 per year at Russian prices. Maximum? $2000-$4000 a year if rational, unlimited if not.

Must be a great career path.
My friends (and myself soon?) are looking at a little less than that when we start aerospace engineering jobs next year. Largely because Oklahoma has dirt-cheap living expenses, but still. :P

And for reference:

(Looks like the ruble equivalent of $60k was a lot different a year ago)

What kind of job is that? Here in HK fresh graduates usually start with $14K per year. Not even the brightest mind hired by Goldman Sachs would get $60K per year here right off the bat......

She's hired in as some sort of IT systems engineer, I'm not sure of her official job title.
The corporation is Unam Provident https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unum.

She'd been working as Christmas help at Kohls for some spending money, she'll be working this weekend, but I'll see her in two weeks for her graduation (plus finals week is happening soon). I'll try to find out what I can about her job description.

To top it off she's graduating a semester early. Did I mention my kiddo is awesome?!?

I'm tremendously proud of her, that's for sure.

Damn, and in my prospective industry, 25k a year is a 'good' starting salary. Give PhantomDestroyerEscort our congrats.

She must have some very useful skills in IT then. But I wouldn't be surprised, when she spends all that time with the Cruiser

Ugh, I need the strategy guide.

I may have to go to the Caribbean for 2 months this winter, paid through work. Life is so unfair.

Yeah I'd rather stay at school in France 8am to 5pm, while paying tuition fees. I'm so sorry for you. [/sarcasm]

Actually, if I had the choice between going to the Caribbean and redoing my college years, I'd do the college all over again, hands down. What a great time...learning new stuff, college girls,...more college girls. Yeah...it was a good time.

Not in engineering, there aren't. :P

:(

3 remaining. 3. Then I'm freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Whatever. Pieces of paper do not frighten me.

If you went to the Zoo, you'd agree.

I did well on my first pass through - if I got to keep my PhD brain for the second go through...wow...that would be the end of the world. The party would be visible from space and would probably cause the eastern seaboard of the U.S. to shake into the sea.

My degrees are in mechanical engineering. You have to think outside the box, my friend. That's why you go to a university! Explore the liberal arts and social sciences! Bra-less, sun dress-wearing, free thinking college girls FTW.

Thing is. Blue pill: Girls, fun, parties. Red pill: Orbiter. Guess what I chose. :P
