Internet Best Space Films?

Yes, me too. How could I. Contact was a good one.
It's better than the book IMO (no disrespect to Carl Sagan), and in all fairness, I think he had originally written it as a screenplay, before turning it into a novel when all studios turned it down. Eventually, it was turned back into a film. Go figure.

2001/2010
Moon
When We Left Earth (documentary)
In the Shadow of the Moon (also documentary)
Race for Rockets (BBC documentary-ish)

This just shows a profound lack of space movies out there...

What's wrong with Sunshine?
Its in my top 5

Alien
Aliens
Apollo 13
Sunshine
Red Planet or Armageddon for mindless fun :shifty:

2001, Apollo 13, the old Star Wars movies (not the prequels), Total Recall (the one with Arnold Schwarzenegger), Starship Troopers, Alien (the first one only). Fifth Element, Men in Black, and Independencee Day are great quasi-space movies.

Space Race is certainly on my list, together with Apollo 13, Space Cowboys, 2001, 2010, The Dish, The Right Stuff, Astronaut Farmer, Gravity, When we left Earth.

Then there's also some Spanish film I have on DVD called Stranded. Great Martian scenery.

Space Night
is not in the film or documentary category, but also a nice thing to watch.

Talking about documentaries, Moon Machines is a good one.

There is an item in the movie "2010" that I actually had. In the scene where Roy Schieder is running to get in shape for the trip, his son is riding a recumbent tricycle. This is an earlier design of a trike I bought from a bike shop in Washington state, that was produced by a company called HPE in Kent, Washington. They eventually sold some of these in Nordstrom's, but i can't find any mention of the company anymore. Due to falling on hard times in the early 1990's, I had to sell it. Wish I still had it, could really use it now for the exercise.

2001 A Space Odyssey
Star Trek
Gravity
Contact
Moon

wow. Everyone is saying the same things here. Thats kinda funny.

There are so many to think of.

I don't do the whole number 1, 2, 3 etc etc cause all are good in their own way. and I am not going to say the ones that have been mentioned unless there is need to do so.

Battle beyond the stars --thats a cool classic b movie featuring music by james horner
Moon 44--classic dean devlin before he got into directing.
2010-- cause most of you forgot it.
Star trek The motion picture (remake)--it was how Nick Myers Wanted it to be
Mission to mars--interesting story concept, And cool special effects.

I could go on but then that would take to long. What about sci series. There has been some good ones and bad ones over the years.

Well, TBH, "real" space and "fantasy" space would make for two separate lists.

"From the Earth to the Moon." The Tom Hanks, HBO colaboration mini-series. Even NASA has admitted it's one of the best documentaries to be made. And even though some of fiction and liberty taking can bog you down slightly, it was far more documentary of the whole story behind Apollo than any single movie like Apollo 13.

Moon Machines
Magnificent Desolation are my other favorites
50 years of NASA gets an honorable mention

Tom Cruise did a great job with "When we left the earth"

Sci-Fi is my forte' I cannot label anything as best, but...

Star Trek The entire collection, and it's continuing legacy
Fire Fly With it's movie Serinity
2001 & 2010
The Black Hole
The Last Starfighter, For it's pioneering CGI

and for sheer fun
The "Alien" & "Predetor" series of films "No one can here you scream in space"

1. Gravity (Because it's awesome, nothing else to say)
2. Apollo 13 (Because Saturn V is awesome)
3. 2010 (The views of Jupiter and Io ...)
4. 2001 (Story is a bit better, but doesn't beat 2010 still!)
5. Space part of Oblivion (Because I lack of Space Movies  )

All my favorite films have been covered, so here's some good documentaries
that haven't been mentioned.

Frontiers of Flight: The Threshold of Space (X-15) (1992)
Apollo 13 to the Edge and Back (1994)
The Other Side of the Moon: The Men of Apollo (1989)
The Wonder of it All (2009)
