I have followed the instructions in the folder regarding putting music into orbiter

I am using the MP3 into folder method

I have renamed the playlist file as instructed. When I open orbiter and go to the radio and try to play something. I get a freeze up and not even a CTD. Can someone please help?

I was hoping not to use win amp as I don't normally but the freeze up leads me to think something else is up. I have checked the forum and see nothing about it.

I will see if anything is there. I have played orbiter since then. Does it not over write?

This is the orbiter log. I don't see anything there. I have also included below that the log from orbiter sound

Open the playlist from Windows media player; drag and drop what music you want into the playlist and save it.

I've been listening to ZZ Top all day in LEO.

this is after a freeze

I have 17 mp3's in the folder. I have tried a few ways to do it.

1. load mp3's and switch play mode in mfd when i get to the space setting..freeze

2. the same as above...in sound config set to always play mp3. start orbiter INSTANT FREEZE without any delay.

Yes I do.. I have renamed it to disable it. As it is a wav that should not be a issue as mp3's are compressed files vs uncompressed wav's. When I load the mp3 directly into the folder (option 2 in the read me) the MFD see's the mp3's no problem as seen in the above posts. When loaded the recommended way they are not seen at all and no freeze up happens at all. the wav file is to stop the countdown from happening. I know there is a setting in the sound thing to stop this from happening but I think it is right in the DLL of the ship that I am getting made and using the beta of right now. The renaming has never caused a issue thus far. Only the MP3 causes any sort of issues.

---------- Post added at 09:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:07 PM ----------

in addition. As a wav file is un compressed data it does not need a codec to run. I don't use windows media player at all so it does not have any codec's in it. I do how ever have codec's installed as I can play just fine in win amp as well as the other software I have that deals with any sort of mp3 or compressed music files. I'm a audio engineer so I might not be good at the graphics or making the game cooler but I went to school for audio and I make music for a living so I'm right on my game on that.

I would try deleting/moving the playlist file and just putting the mp3s directly into the mp3 folder. If you try to do both things, OrbiterSound might get confused about where to load the music from.

I did that. When testing the play list I took the mp3's and placed them in a temp folder on my desktop.

when testing the MP3 I re named the playlist to .back like requested in the read me and the mp3's where loaded directly into the folder. I have tested other bitrates and compressions to see if orbiter likes a certain type of file in this case and still the same instant freeze. with no mp3 playing. On screen it does say stopped in this case.

when loaded the playlist I am fine as it does'nt even see the mp3 even thought in the read me it say that the m3u will direct to file location within orbiter.

What file did you rename? The playlist file, or countdown.wav?

Just trying to get all the details here. Did you edit the playlist in WinAmp as directed to add the new files?

ya no problem. The count down that I renamed was in the vessel file yes. The ship that I am getting built by someone and is in beta had it on by default regardless of what the sound config said so I renamed it so that I would not hear it. the file was countdown.wav not the second one because it was not being used at all. I renamed it to countdown_o.wav to not hear it anymore cause I did have it checked off in the sound config but will still coming on. My ship launches fast so the countdown starting when i hit the hover button doesn't work so well when i am already in the air.

---------- Post added at 11:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:01 PM ----------

when trying the mp3 in folder method I renamed the playlist file to.back as stated in the readme (freeze as soon as it loads into orbiter)

when trying the m3u method I removed all mp3's from the folder as stated in the read me
and return the playlist file to normal no .back (does not see mp3's but in win amp they are fine no freeze at all)

I removed the playlist file completely and tried that. with mp3's in folder same result as above (rename attempt)

winamp plays mp3's fine
vdj plays mp3 fine (live performance software the cheap kind)
ableton live (live performance software very expensive) plays them no problem
Adobe Audition no problem
Pro Tools
VLC

I can keep going. I'm a audio guy as I have said so I got it all.

But the point is I just don't get why I have all these codec's, decoders, encoders you name it and I can't get mp3's into orbiter with out a crash following the instructions.
I'm sorry if I come across as a bit of a...you know what...but I have spent all this money on this audio gear and software for my own work and then when it comes to relax time I spend more time trying to do what I would think is easy and it always turns out to be a pain and not relaxing at all.

Never had a single problem with Orbiter playing other MP3s, and never heard of any user having such problems.

So it must be either your pc or the way you did things.

when trying the m3u method I removed all mp3's from the folder as stated in the read me
and return the playlist file to normal no .back (does not see mp3's but in win amp they are fine no freeze at all)

That's to be expected. The original playlist, if you didn't make any changes to it other than renaming it, is looking for a single mp3 file called calm-spaces.mp3. If it's not there, you're not going to get any music. If you want the playlist to find music elsewhere on your PC, you have to open the playlist in Winamp, add the songs to the playlist, then save it.

From the readme:
WINAMP M3U PLAYLIST SOLUTION (recommended)
------------------------------------------
The better solution is to edit the orbitersound_playlist.m3u
located in this folder with winamp. If you use this approach
YOU DON'T NEED TO DROP MP3 here, they will be grabbed
from the original location on your disk

COPY FILES TO THIS MP3 FOLDER
-------------------------------------
Another solution is to simply copy any MP3 you want
into this directory. IN THIS CASE YOU MUST EMPTY THE PLAYLIST
or RENAME IT AS "orbitersound_playlist.back" FOR EXAMPLE.
OrbiterSound looks first for the M3U playlist
and stops the search of MP3s in this folder if it finds
even one entry in the playlist.
Notice how it says 'if it finds even one entry in the playlist.' It doesn't say 'if it finds one entry and finds that mp3.'

Here are the contents of my [Orbiter]/sound/mp3 folder for example:

Maybe run a dxdiag? Even though Windows Media Player is working fine, maybe something with your DirectShow installation is borked.
