Hi, jedidia!

I know what you mean now! Thanks! So you are saying go as far as 6 or 7 light years away from the sun then start having problems with orbiter? Very interesting! I read on this forum somewhere somebody has gone far as 18e308 meters away from the sun without any problems.

Cheers,
Vincent

No it can't. I don't know what the maximum distance in orbiter is but when you get there you'll see that you are still gravitationally bound to the Sun.

So I can't reach solar escape velocity?
Look, I know Orbiter can't do interstellar, and I'm not trying to be a pain about this;) Just seems to me someone ought to be able to put a few stars out there in a radius of 15,000 LY.

Well - you can - however there are no other bodies that can affect your hyerbolic trajectory. I suspect by "bound" Garyw meant that you're position is still calculated relative to the sun.

Hi, guys!

I read on the internet you have to be at least 2 light years or 126,000 AU away from the sun to be completely free of Sun's gravity.

Technically, gravity continues to act over any distance. However, in real life there are PLENTY of gravity fields in competition to overpower one another depending on where you are. If you are in a universe with only one star, such as Orbiter, you can never truly leave the gravitational influence of that star, since there is nothing else competing with it. It may become to small to measure by the simulation though, but my suspicion is that the influence is asymptotic and would either become an error or round down to zero when all the precision is used up. An error would be more realistic, IMO

Half way to Alfa centauri

the oort cloud finishes at 1 LY so it´s may be correct that 2 YL represent the end of the solar system in gravity. At + 2 YL the influence of Alfa centauri is more important compared with the sun.

Stock orbiter it´s not a good interestelar sim, it requires special addons or another version that include the possibility of interestellar travel or divide the space in Boxes

Hi, guys!

I'm now at the distance of 508,605,000,000 kilometers or 3,400 AU away from the sun and moving at the speed of 177,057 kilometers per second!! @ Hartman, at +2 ly away from the influence of Alpha centauri's gravity is dependent on where you are at +2 ly away from the sun. What does it mean divide the space in boxes? Thanks!

Cheers,
Vincent

It just means that Orbiter cant handle interstellar travel all in one simulation. You can travel to Alpha Centauri in orbiter Galaxy though.

Hi, BruceJohnJennerLawso!

I know about the orbiter galaxy! I already checked it, I think the orbiter galaxy is kind of old and it needs to be updated.

Cheers,
Vincent

No Orbiter Galaxy is up to date, which I'm pretty sure Jedidia would attest to. If theres problems with it, PM me, and I'll help troubleshoot.

Hi, BruceJohnJennerLawso!

Yes, I think the current version of orbiter galaxy on the download page needs to be updated as it is old and quite buggy.

Cheers

Again, it is compatible with Orbiter 2010, not necesarilly finished, but it is usable. Can you let me know what issues you've been having with it?

Hi, BruceJohnJennerLawso!

Yes,I have used orbiter galaxy before and it is very impressive indeed. I think it would be easier if the orbiter galaxy is built-in to orbiter instead of trying to download it off the internet. I hope to see orbiter galaxy built-in to the next version of orbiter. Thanks!

Cheers,
Vincent

Then you'll be disappointed. The whole point of orbiter is to provide a single solar system with realistic physics. It is not Freespace, Universal combat or evochron.

With quantity of planets discovered in another stars would be very interesting the posiblitity of interestelar travel and explore new challenges. Multiple stars, planets orbiting close to dwarf stars , hot jupiters...

But it´s true that for gaming and combat there are better games.

Besides, the Solar System is so bloody big, and there are so many addons for the few things that are missing. It's the ultimate flight sim. You can hop a 747 from LA to Tampa, and then board a spacecraft and fly to Jupiter! How could one not be satisfied?

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'd love to see interstellar travel in Orbiter--it certainly seems the next logical step. But count what's there, man--not what's missing;)

Actually, I don't think it would be that far-fetched, since the point of Orbiter galaxy is just the interstellar travel framework, nothing else. The problem is mostly that Orbiter galaxy is not finished, and a little perplexing to use for those who don't read documentation.

On top of that, I recall the good Doctor saying that he would want to implement relativity if interstellar travel were ever included too. It gives me headaches just thinking about it right now...

I need some sort of :reallyreallyagree: emoticon here!

I think that the chance to explore, colonize, conquer Sol system is way cooler than any episode of Star Trek, because the challenges are so (relatively) close to us right now, just waiting to be tackled. Sitting around dreaming about interstellar travel is pointless; its just not going to happen anytime soon, or maybe ever.
