Wow, tight schedule on the Progress ! :)

The ISS is going to be completely cramped with hardware and supplies ! :P
 
Will this new Progress already use the Kurs-NA antenna, just tested by Progress M-15M by undocking/redocking to the ISS?

This mission is special in regard of testing a more expedite approach and docking routine. After it's rehearsed on few Progresses, it will also be on a Soyuz.

"Second stage" operating nominally (decide yourself, if there are boosters strapped to it, it can't be the second stage !)

Third stage (Block I) running normally.

The docking occurred as the space station flew 253 miles off the western coast of South America.

Over the next few minutes, the Progress docking probe will retract to allow hooks and latches to bring the spacecraft to a firm seal with the station.

DOCKING. The speedy supply ship known as Progress M-16M has docked to the Pirs module of the International Space Station, completing a same-day launch and rendezvous demonstration to deliver a fresh load of provisions, spare parts and rocket fuel for orbiting laboratory complex.

This trek from the Baikonur pad to the outpost took just four orbits and less than six hours versus the usual 34 orbits and 50 hours.

The freighter is carrying nearly three tons of food, fuel and supplies for the orbiting outpost, including 1,962 pounds of propellant for the station's Russian maneuvering thrusters, 110 pounds of oxygen, 925 pounds of water and 2,817 pounds of spare parts, maintenance items and experiment hardware.
 
Who can beat this with Thorton's addon ? Nice challenge for orbinauts (of course, you have to save enough fuel for deorbiting) :)

Actually, with a good pick of launch window, less fuel is spent during this high-speed approach, because fewer attitude changes / spinning / despinning activities are performed on the way. So it's explained.

Hmmm..

in our local newspaper today they wrote such a fast encounter is much more expensive than the traditional one. But of course no background facts for this.

The only reason I might think of is that the launch window is much shorter and maybe insurance is more expensive?

Cramming 3 day's work into 6 hour's can result in a lot of overtime pay. Sounds counter intuitive, but that is often the case.
