Project Shuttle-D Development version 1.2

Well if the mass of fuel in the tank exceeds the mass of your pay load then the tank will need to be sturdier than your payload bay was won't it?

Strength generally requires mass.

, I dont think were communicating here. If fuel mass is neglected:

Mass tank - Mass PLBay=?

The fuel tanks are only carrying LH2, so they only really need to carry modest structural loads & whatever cryogenics are required, but how much should the mass change if I replace the Plbay with a fuel tank? Is it likely to go up or down, and is it changing on scales of metric tonnes or just a few kilograms. I only really need a reasonable guess.

Anyways, thought Id post an update of my progress so far, and give a bit of a taste of the future. Ive been able to recover my anim8or mesh sources & begin some rehab work on the rather deficient meshes to correct some problems (Payload bay flickering?) & add some new stuff. Id like to present the Shuttle-DB

-short range "whip" antennae added on the cockpit slightly aft. Ku band might also be added, either in the main PLbay on the DA version, or on the bottom of the cockpit structure (DB version)
-UMMU EVA grapple points. Most of any real EVA is spent hanging on for dear life to your ship. Now Ive added some handles along the dorsal part of the truss, & with UMMU "child" points, you can maintain that death grip on your ship
-Gear & payload bays removed in favor of another fuel tank. Preliminary work shows a boost up to around 6-7 kps of delta-v; Lunar Mission? I think so :hotcool:.

One other thing Im planning on starting work on is a one-man capsule capable of at least lunar reentry speeds. My assumption is that it will be more effective if I give it a squatter apollo CM shape than the smaller cross section of the mercury capsule, so as to produce higher drag/lift?

First flight confirmed it: 7.5 kps of delta v when inserted to an Earth orbit of about 200k

I think I'll be updating this add-on in a week or two, particularly for the benefit of the planners on the deep six project.

A couple features Ive managed so far:

-Delta-vee, velocity, and altitude now show on the HUD
-RCS simplified to 2 tanks, one aft, one forward. Assigning individual tanks to each thruster made sense at the time...
-Two RCS modes added, Alpha (normal), & Beta (only aft thrusters). This should allow users to use the DB as a tug for pushing modules around cislunar space.
-DA version now consumes "Hydrogen" UCGO cargo to fill its tanks. This allows for refuelling, although the only Hydrogen cargo I know of so far is found in my UCGO cargo containers ;)
-With the update, the launch vehicle for the Shuttle-D will be switching to the Velcro EELVs Delta IV Heavy. Its actually better than the themis was in this role. Fairings are improved a little bit too.
-UMMU crew consumes water as well as oxygen. Maybe if I have time Ill add food too.

I was hoping to add one more feature before I release. Given that LH2 is the primary fuel for the NTR, does anyone know how I could simulate propellant boiloff?

Man I need to redownload this thing. It's getting more awesome all the time:)

I can't wait for the update.

Awww , please stop

It isn't necessarily as far along as I was expecting 1.1 to be, but a lot of content has been added since December, so it is about time for an update. I need to comment my source, tweak a handful of items in the code, double check my textures, redo the docs & make sure all my files are in place. Not that bad of a list actually, it might take a day or 2.

Update is now up on Orbit Hangar Mods. Please enjoy everyone!

The shuttle Ds zip format is corrupted.

Yep, its is. Something must have gone wrong in transfer. Ill try again & get it up for you.

Uploading the new one right now. Looks like the memory stick I transferred it on was acting up, sorry for the inconvenience :)

Ack

I'll upload the fix in a minute. I made a separate folder under config/vessels for the Shuttle-D & forgot to rewrite the filepaths in the scenarios. The textures for the fairing were missing too, uploading the fix in a few minutes
.

Third update is uploaded. I dont think there should be any issues this time.

Hi,Bruce I got some time to mess with your Shuttle-DA,very good so far,I haven't tried the whole water-hydrogen consumption thing yet,did you say that it was one of your addons also?
Umm-Oh yeah, you know what would be cool if you could make the cargo hold a seperate thing, and instead of having it bullt in to the ship, you could have it docked,or attached to the ship.I haven't had a chance to try out the Shuttle-DB yet, hopefully when things quiet down here I can.Alright one more thing,I really don't care for the launcher,I have been experimenting with different rockets to try,and find a better match, sorry about that, nothing personal, other than that great Job so far. Thanks

Oh yeah, I may have forgotten to mention which button consumes the cargo. It will only consume "Hydrogen" cargo, of which I unfortunately have created the only one, and the refuelling process will be really slow at something like 70 kilos a box. I need to include support for other resources next time as well.

Ill make note of that cargo hold idea, its actually a good idea, I just need to figure out how to implement it. Maybe if I cut out some truss bars...

I dont mind any criticism about the LV choice, it certainly isnt as visually eye popping as Themis was, but velcro does make some things a lot easier. After 1.2 I'll probably freeze this project & move on to Shuttles E & F, since working from a clean slate will probably help me avoid a few pitfalls that make development on it harder. One of the issues with the Shuttle-D was that it was my first vessel add-on of any kind, and lessons about best practices in certain things had to be learned along the way, making the whole project messier than my "second gen" add-ons. I think you'll find the next two pretty interesting as well ;)

Just to clarify though, were you able to find anything better for this? I would be really interested to see what you came up with.

So.....

I guess I need to rename this thread again, since Im moving on into 1.2. The Shuttle-D has served me well, but as I learn more about development, I begin to see that it just doesn't leave me much room to develop in for various reasons. As such, 1.2 will most likely be the final version of the Shuttle-D, although I'll probably keep it up to date if needed.

But there is one last mission that I have for the ship, and an interesting one at that. As Ive mentioned recently, I plan on building Venture Station at the EML2 Lagrangian point, but I sense that it will be very tricky to navigate there, and I wouldn't mind doing a prep mission before I start sending out actual station modules to deep space.

So Im planning a real-time mission for the Christmas 2013 period, a manned flight to L2 and back, releasing a sort of "marker satellite" that will act as a beacon for arriving payloads. The mission plan will be as follows:

-Falcon 9 with Manned 7 Dragon capsule will launch into LEO with a crew of 2-3. It will rendezvous with the mission payload, just a small framework module which carries the buoy payload (and solves CG issues by making the Dragons position line up properly with the overall stack center of mass. If youve ever tried to use the Shuttle-D as a tug, you'll know what I mean)

-Shuttle-DL launches into LEO and rendezvouses with the crew for TLI.

-Shuttle-DL performs TLI, then stages away the NTR engine. I chose this because it will be impossible to easily store the Hydrogen fuel for the mission duration, and because throwing away the engine allows me to skirt some cooling issues caused by residual heat from the engine. In the cavity created by the old habitat tunnel, there is now a SPS engine using storable hypergolics that will be used for the burns at L2 (thankfully only 1200 m/s or so)

-Mission stack reaches L2, deploys the buoy, performs TEI, and coasts back to Earth. Shuttle-DL is jettisoned right before reentry of course

Hmmm, lets see if this works

So I finally decided to do some back-to-basics with this project. After discovering a horrible looking artefact on the old CM, I decided that the old command module would need to be scrapped for good. I'm now working on a new version, made along the lines of the interiors of the Aquila. The new VC will look something in between the Shuttle-A & the LEM, with much smaller, better placed windows.

Been a while since I last updated this

Really need to work on the exterior panel textures, but I am reasonably happy with the inside

Obviously given the length of time this has been inactive, the project is pretty much dead. Basically, the amount of time I have available to work on this is quite low due to school, and due to a much bigger non-Orbiter project that I have in the works. Beyond that, I kinda have come to hate the project in general, it was a fun starter project to learn Orbiter vessel development with, but there are a lot of things about it that gradually became more of a time sink than they were worth (trying to update a crappy model being one major part). If and when I finally have enough time for stuff like that, I would much rather work on the Aquila lander project.

Sooo, I am officially closing up shop here. If you truly, super-duper must have the last version of the project (1.1), it can be found on dropbox here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gum0sxptajp0pzx/Shuttle-D%201.1.zip?dl=0

and if you want the complete source files of the project as of 1.2 which I was developing, they can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/te3ptbczjnxqb8z/Shuttle-D_source.zip?dl=0

I wouldnt reccomend continuing development on the project, but if you find anything of use for your own projects, feel free to make use of it.
