Gaming Free Falcon 5 Mega-thread

Wow...they seem to go out of their way to make sure the unititiated can't find out whether or not you need Falcon 4. Finally only found that out in one line buried in the manual after downloading and installing. That was a waste of time and effort.

You should have asked here!;)

To answer your question....I don't believe you need it. I didn't.

I think they say that for those since originally both variants of FreeFalcon and Benchmark Sims(BMS) were derivatives of the original Falcon 4.0. Not the Falcon 4.0 Allied Force.

But with FreeFalcon I think they took the necessity of having to install the old Falcon 4.0 now. Before that was the case.

With BMS though, the install still asks for the old install of Falcon 4.0 so with BMS4 you do need it to install the program.

BMS does ask for the Falcon.exe for legal reasons file, but it does perform a clean install.
For FreeFalcon you don't technically need Falcon4, but you should have bought it.

BMS 4 has a completely revamped DX9 graphic engine, which I believe solves numerous issues with some graphics cards. Some time ago it was nearly impossible to play FreeFalcon5 or other older versions of Falcon4 with an Nvidia graphics card and, I believe, some ATi cards too. Don't know how the situation is now, regarding that.

My video card is ATI and there's no problem with it running either BMS or FreeFalcon. New or old versions they all ran on mine.

Hopefully not as buggy as the previous version...

The Mig-29 handles much better in my opinion...

I'm a Falcon old timer here. I played the original Falcon two decades ago briefly, and when Falcon 3.0 came out in 1992 I bought and fell completely in love with it. It was hands-down the best flight sim I've played ever. I had all the addons, campaign packs, MiG-29, FA-18 from Spectrum Holobyte a bunch of cool third-party addons like Strategic Falcon (StratFalc) which let you control not only your own squadron but also the entire air and ground forces! Loooooved it!

Then my DOS computer became old fashioned and I got a Windows 95 machine, and then Windows XP. Spectrum Holobyte sold out to MicroProse, who released Falcon 4.0 around 2003 or so, and it was gigantic nest of bugs. It was a beautiful thing when it worked, but I could never get through more than one mission without a lockup or ctd.

MicroProse went out of business and Falcon wound up as a hobbyist thing and I lost interest.

But I'll watch this thread and see if it's time to jump back in...

Well, if you've still got the original Falcon 4.0, you can run Falcon BMS, which is arguably the best F-16 simulator out there today. FreeFalcon is also of course a valid, if buggy option.
