Cycling / Running - Logs, Stories, & Pictures (any fellow cyclists or runners here?)

I don't have any clue of jogging. I admire people who can do it for hours.

I feel the same - over the past year, I took to jogging for 15 minutes around the garden for exercise. It was such a chore, and although I'm sure it was good for me, I much prefer cycling. I can cycle for hours and get (probably more) exercise, and it's actually fun to do - it's an adventure and it's rewarding to rack up the miles on new routes every day.

Which do you guys think is better for you - jogging or cycling? I'd be interested to know.

Cycling is very good too but requires more time (and an adequate environnement).

Swimming is another option not to neglect. It drains a lot of calories and energy, and allow muscles that are often unused to work.

I also think that swimming is good. You can do it in old age too. Cycling also. But jogging is more critical I think. It can cause problems with joints and ligaments which can make it almost as "unhealthy" as football. So I personally think that swimming is the best, followed by cycling and then jogging.

Driving the 76 Km as planned was no issue at all by the way. I did not suffer from aching muscles or anything else the next day. Nothing. So I guess I am in pretty good shape. My average speed was 24 Km/h, which was due to the climbs of the route.

Last night I drove only 30 Km. But I noticed a significant increase of power from my thigh muscles, which I think is a result of the 76 Km tour. This time my average speed was an "amazing" (in my case) 34 Km/h around the lake. The average speed on the entire route was only 28 Km/h though, due to one climb. But I am very close to my goal, which is 30 Km/h on an entire route :)

Bought my first race performance bike today. Waited for it to go on sale and got a great deal. Full carbon fiber frame. Going on my first ride tomorrow!

Awesome bike indeed! And now you can carry two bottles :)

Looks cool! Hard to imagine what is it like to ride on it.

Mine is much, much simpler.

Thanks guys. Bike rides so smooth! It's amazing how much carbon fiber absorbs road bumps compared to aluminum.

Few better angles attached below.

My first impression of the bike is very good. Compared to my previous bike, the difference is night and day. My Trek is full aluminum, which is heavier, and can be rough to ride. The new bike, being a carbon fiber frame and fork, absorbs the bumps in the road so much better. The Zipp wheels I bought previously also help to make the ride really nice (...which cost almost as much as the bike). With carbon fiber, they can shape the frame anyway they like, where metal they're limited. As a result, the head tube and bottom bracket are significantly wider, and all of the tubes have more aerodynamic shapes to reduce some of the drag. I know you may think how much can aerodynamics make on a bike? When you're going 20 mph or less, almost nothing. However, we ride in excess of 30 mph at times, and I've noticed the biggest benefits come at 25+ mph. Overall the bike is very stiff and responds well. With the wider bottom bracket I'm getting less energy loss from the power I'm putting out. I also have more gears with this bike, so I found it much easier to dial it in perfectly during a ride.

I'm still recovering from some tendonitis in my knee, so it will be a while longer before I can start riding 12 hours a week again.

Did another running session today. I've bought a cardio-frequency-meter this week, so I was trying it in real conditions for the first time.

And it helps a lot !

I easily held 35 minutes staying in the "fitness" BPM range defined by an equation given in the handbook. The bad side is that my speed dropped to 6.47 km/h. I ran 3795 meters.

But it was rather easy in comparison to shorter sessions, so now I target a 30 minutes duration with a speed of 7 km/h. Have to start somewhere !

Good job mate! Thanks for sharing with us.

Hope you are on the road again as soon as possible

It's only 6 hours in my case by the way. I'll try to increase the 76 Km tour up to 100 Km this week, and drive it at least once a week, beside 50 Km tours. I think it's enough with my current bike.

How much is the weight of your new bike?

we ride in excess of 30 mph at times

You are as fast with your bike, as I am going to be with what I plan to buy next year (for the city)

PS: driving car simply is too expensive, at least in Germany. And it still feels expensive even if you have money.

Well I thought I'd finally tune in and hop into this conversation :)
So I decided to start a jogging routine in the summer vacation, which I did. I've been jogging around 1.8km 3 times a week (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday) for around 5.5 weeks now. Right now my average time is around 8:35 and my record is at 8:15. Is it good or bad for a 1.65-meter tall asthmatic guy? :P
For some reason though, I can't get any better... I use my inhaler before each jog, as suggested by my respirologist. She said that routinely jogging should make physical activities (such as jogging and sprinting) easier for me, but I am not feeling any change as I am not able to run faster than 8:15 for that 1.8km course.

So, I decided to dust off the old bike and take it for a spin. So far I've only ridden it through the neighborhood, but it's nice. Honestly, cycling seems more enjoyable now for some reason.

Looking to buy a bike myself in the very near future. I had gotten away from riding about 12 years ago, and it didn't take long for my weight to suffer. I think the time has come to get back to it.

I prefer road bikes, with drop handles, however at 5'4" it is proving very difficult to find one that will fit me, and my budget for that matter.

Running session this evening. 30 minutes sharp, 3300 meters, 6.60 km/h. No wind, temperature 32°C at 8:00 PM. Cardiac beat around 150 BPM (after 6-7 minutes of "warm up").

So it's a little faster than last time (6.47 km/h), but also the session was 5 minutes and 395 meters shorter, and the BPM more around 146.

Next time I'll try 30 minutes on a nearby 400 meters track, to have an exact idea of my current level.

The very positive thing is that 30 minutes is becoming an easy routine. I think I could target 45 minutes as an endurance test.

I just rode through through most of the neighborhood and back in less than 20 minutes! That was fantastic and far more enjoyable than just taking a walk or run. Eventually, I'd like to take a ride through downtown Atlanta.:)

Took another ride a bit further today and sometimes felt like I was on the wrong end of cyclist tag.
