Why not have a small pressurized cab pulling a UCGO compatible trailer? A trailer built with lightweight materials would probably only weigh 50-100 kg.

We could do that, but both vehicles would have to meet the quantifications listed in this thread. We would also have to develop our own, as anything with UCGO weighs the same.

To solve the quantification problem, stick heavy-duty tires on the trailer. Is it even possible to make the trailer swivel when the rover turns?

I think that's been discussed, probably in the archive somewhere, which is a mess.

The Mars Ares aircraft is a glider, so we'd need to drop it from the Skycrane or something to launch it. I'm guessing it would glide to a certain distance from the drop-off point and then turn around to be recovered back at the base.

Honestly though, is this worth it? What can we do with an unmanned glider that we can't do with orbital or SMEV surface operations?

Anyway, if we must have some kind of atmospheric winged vehicle, I think this fits the bill.

No, I don't think so. (website)
But that would be interesting, to stick a little velcro rocket on it...It might look something like the V-1 flying bomb. :p
I haven't tried flying it, I'll see what it's all about.

How would you get on with something like this?
You should recognize that airframe shape. :p Ares does kind of remind me of the Meive wing shape.
It's designed to fly to altitude using a jet, and then glide the way down. Except we'd have a rocket instead of a jet, and on Mars. That's one hell of a ride for UMMUs!

Granted, it does fly...sort of.
"Sugoi, sugoi..."
Hey, it's amazing enough, the thing came from a Miyazaki movie! That hole is where the jet should go!

I just got Mars Ares for Orbiter and it does have an engine. What?
For some reason it gives me 110.0 kN thrust at 5 km from Mars surface (according to the visual forces arrows), but it hardly consumes any propellant, and the HUD says it's giving me zero thrust at full throttle.
Also there are some problems in the mesh with control surfaces animations and some reversed normals.
I'm going to try their simulator and see how that works.

I'll have to give that a whirl, too.

U~nfortunately, the download timer says something on the order of 4 days. I'll have to get back to you on that. :coffee:

Heh, I thought you might have that problem.:download:
Luckily I'm a bit faster, just got it working now. Actually, besides the terrain, better telemetry data, and government funding, it's not any better than what we could do in Orbiter. :p
In fact, it seems less accurate in some ways, notably in how it makes the Delta IV sound like a firecracker, and the usual zooming sounds in space, etc.
What's really annoying is how the engine seems to decide when it wants to fire, giving you no throttle control; it just fires in bursts, it doesn't care if you're going to stall when it cuts out during a climb!
On the engine, it seems to have more thrust than the one in Orbiter and lower propellant efficiency.
MarsFlight actually simulates fuel, oxydizer, and the gas used to pressurize them, which is kind of cool. And it's much easier to maneuver, less like the Delta-Starliner's current WIP release.
I actually tried the G42 on Mars a while ago, to see how it did with that large wing area. 楽しかったw

couldnt we design our own scram jet sort of aircraft to fly on mars that could be packed togeather in a apollo lunar rover sort of thing

...What?
SCRAMjets need Oxygen to burn with fuel, which there is almost none of on Mars, contrary to what the XR2 may have you believe. Orbiter only models pressure and density of planet's atmospheres, not composition. So the XR2 SCRAMs work, but not realistically. Really you'd just be dumping fuel.

Whoa! You've got the means! If we we were cat-burglars I would totally team up with you!

I was thinking just the hangars and their textures, but now that I know we can indeed rip apart entire meshes like that, maybe we could use some of the antennas?

I think we can use any part of any mesh --as long as we get permission from the author
