Safety body Eurocontrol said up to 4,000 flights across northern Europe would be cancelled on Thursday.

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace until 1800BST amid fears of engine damage. The airspace restriction was the most significant in living memory, a spokesman said.

Nats suggested that the restrictions were unlikely to be lifted after 1800, saying it was "very unlikely that the situation over England will improve in the foreseeable future".

Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark were among the European countries hit.

The restrictions were imposed after the Met Office warned the ash was sufficient to clog engines.
Eyewitnesses, anyone?

It is not like there is already something visible here in Germany, but the godmother of my daughter lives just ~50 km away from the volcano in Iceland (on the safe side of the mountains).

Not an eyewitness but I work in London and the sky is very quiet as the airspace has been restricted. It's a little odd. We've also got a couple of people there were supposed to be travelling and they might have to replan.

Perhaps, the ash in the air will become visible at sunset and twilight?

I am pretty sure it will. But I am not sure if it reached far enough south-east then to be visible at my place.

WHAT THE! That's amazing. Would be great if it makes the summer a bit colder

Is it just that it is being reported more often or is there an unusual amount of tectonic activity in the last few months.

cool link, thanks. Guess it is just being reported more in the news. Or maybe I'm watching more news.

See the slide show on this page:

It is expected to have reached all North Sea countries by sunset.

So far, the sky is completely clear here. But I will try to make some pictures of the sunset.

Shall we sue the Icelandic people for the damage that is caused by their volcano on our air traffic?

That's not fair! I wont see anything here in southern Germany! :)

It is also that the sensor networks are now much better.

More like the news has the ability to report a lot more so they are able to make people more aware of these sorts of things.

That would be the American thing to do--good thing it's not coming south-west!
