ISS REBOOST QUESTION

Today the ISS went thru a reboost with atlantis attached. should they not have waited till undock before reboosting what about the extra mass of a 110? ton orbiter stuck to its back? Fuel waste?

The Shuttle reboosted the ISS by using its RCS for a long long long burn.

The ISS did not waste fuel.
 
Is this manoeuvre is done with the aft +Z thrusters? If so, why is there no concern about these thrusters being directed towards the ISS? All the info I've read about rendezvous and docking indicates that the shuttle tries to avoid firing its thrusters towards the ISS.
