Just watching the draw. England is grouped with USA, Algeria and Slovenia.
We could be in with a chance, har, ahr har.

N.

Germany with Australia, Ghana and Serbia... maybe we can become second this time.

Better than being North Korea next year...Group G is punishment...maybe a political decision.

Most of the groups look like it will be pretty easy for the seeded team (although I don't know if South Africa can beat Mexico or France). Holland finally got a good group, and I like their chances to do well given the tournament tree. Group G will be tough, but it is survivable (at least for Portugal).

I suspect you will come second in your group :P

I think we might be in with a chance...

I'm not a "crazy soccer fan "(even though most Greeks are). But i think Otto Rehhagel's "defensive play" has to be stopped! (Please... no more 70+ year old's "insights" on modern football!)
I was at work at the time - while Greece was playing with South Korea- and i only heard the match on the radio...
So... after 2 goals... we went ALL OUT front... and we had something like 13 corner kicks for us and 3 for South Korea... (Not to mention the final shots...!)

WHY THE HELL DIDN'T we go ALL OUT in the first place!?

But after we received two "sweet" ones, we did...
SO!???
Defensive football (soccer to our U.S friends) may have gotten us a title on the 2004 European championship... (by some crazy reason... we won the Eurovision song contest that very same year - AND we where hosting the OLYMPIC GAMES!) but ever since that... it's all "downhill"!

In conclusion: Defensive soccer... GO HOME! If you have the guts... try outsmarting your opponent! And don't get 10+1 players behind the defence line!

Good luck to our team against Argentina...

Guess why Rehhagel doesn't get back to Germany... his style of playing is only destructive, as long as the other teams are bad enough and lack the speed and creativity, you can win that way with Rehhagels version of Catenaggio. Greece success depends lot on having a striker that hits with the few chances he gets.

Rehhagel is special - his teams can only play very bad or very good, but nothing in between. and he is VERY autocratic. As long as he can do how he pleases without people questioning him, he can work - just look at Werder Bremen.

Rehhagel was best IMHO in Kaiserslautern, when he was forced by the situation to use a more offensive style of playing as he prefers. He managed to take the team from second division to national champion in just one year...and almost back again.

Actually, i was hopping i'd get a reply from a German, (especially you Unwurpe!)
As a German... (and if you are a soccer fan) you know of Rehhagel's play no?

Guess why Rehhagel doesn't get back to Germany...

A sweet complex of condoes in Santorini, a Greek citizen-manship- and pat on the back from the Greek President at the time (who btw doesn't have any other authorities than patting the backs of soccer managers and welcoming back to Greece Eurovision song contenstants!)

Not to mention a nice fat pension!

his style of playing is only destructive
So True! It DID get us a title back in 2004 but your next phrase puts it SO eloquently!

his teams can only play very bad or very good, but nothing in between.

We WERE LUCKY - very lucky indeed- back in 2004... but you CANNOT play the same game any more! (the 2006 European championship proved that!)

All that ranting comming out of a non-soccer-fan!

I was Werder Bremen Fan during Rehhagels time there, and it was a great time... (I just became Wolfsburg Fan after they entered second division and I watched a few games of them)

Don't underestimate Rehhagel - despite his tactics being older than the Acropolis, he is really one of the best managers in European football and many legendary players in Germany had been discovered and trained by him. He is maybe a bit unpopular because of his extremes and ottocracy, but you can't deny that he knows his business.

And that Greece managed to get qualified for the world championship finals is already a big success - just look which countries had to stay home because you got to South Africa (for example Russia or Sweden). Of course the first game of Greece was like the last 6 years, painful. But where are Greek clubs in European football? The best Greek Players are hardly known outside Greece, and often play in second grade clubs. And still - Your Gekas is the top scorer of the qualification inside the UEFA with ten goals. He even defeated Bosnias Dzeko, a player that is worth "minimal 40 million Euro".

Remember: For beautiful football, you need very very good players. Just good players isn't enough. Wolfsburg became champion by using the same tactics as Rehhagel does, and when we had a coach that wanted the players to play beautiful instead of successful, things went bad - because the players are specialists, not prodigies. you can't teach players in a few weeks a completely new playing style and you have to use the players in a way that they can do with their abilities.

EDIT: And there must be some strange British joke that I don't understand about being a English goalkeeper. Maybe it is like the Eurovision Song Contest... because you failed often at it, you only send the worst you have...

Once again... lucky!

SO TRUE!!!

Gekas IS a very good player but Ninis or even the young Vasilios Koutsianikoulis (don't feel bad, even i have a difficulty pronouncing his name.. lol) are far better! (That last one could easily be the next "Beckham"!)
But they deserve MORE opportunitties than Rehhagel will ever give them!

Doesn't say much that a player is good (and the next Beckham is a mortal insult... did you ever see him play lately?) - the question is, is he good enough and are others better on his position?

The German coach did also leave Marin at home for the euro 2008, because he wasn't ready then, and now Löw had never a reason to doubt his decision to select Marin. Marin improved a lot at Werder Bremen in the last two years.

You can only have 11 players on the pitch... and not the 11 best players of the country, but the 11 players that form the best possible team.

England 1 - USA 1.............A fine start for we British.

Well, we've achieved what we set out to achieve: Wayne Rooney has managed to go a full 90 minutes without saying a single swear word! :P

And at least we've proved once & for all that Football is NO better than Soccer! ;D

Great game, England. Really great.

Have to be honest, the only sport I'm vaguely intersted in is cricket, when the Antipodeans are losing. Do like watching ski jumping though.

Be interesting to see how our multi-million players cope with the rest of the world...

I only really watch Football when England are playing in a big championship.

Slovenia played well to qualify for the world cup, but I'd be surprised if they manage to get into the second round...

Still, it was nice to kick Russia's ass...

I'm pretty pumped on the US getting a draw out of the England match. Looking forward to watching Holland do some damage (I've got my Oranje jersey on right now!), and hopefully a respectful finish for the Americans.

I don't really like to watch sports that are called two different things. Oh the endless confusion between Football and (American) Football...

Hup Holland, hup!
The Netherlands are in a nice group so it shouldn't be to hard to get to the next round.
I think we'll get beaten in the semi-finals however.

I'm pretty sure that the US will get to the next round as the next opponents are Algeria and Slovenia.

Ps. You should get this shirt.
