Hopefully I'm in the right forum (for beginners). I'm not a complete beginner; I did try out Orbiter some years ago, but not enough to become knowledgeable or skilled.

I have what is possibly the most basic of beginners questions, if you'll humor me: what is the current status of Orbiter? I'm looking around at various threads and so far I haven't found anything that answers the question. I assume this is due to the "forest for the trees" phenomenon; the question is so fundamentally basic that it doesn't get asked much (especially by the forum members here, because they know the answer!).

On the main site, it shows the last release as having taken place in '06. Okay, from that, it's easy to conclude that the project is dead. But then I find this forum, and almost every section has posts from today, indicating that the community is very much alive. So I'm left wondering...

Are new releases being developed? Has the developers released the source code? Is it all about modding now? If no new versions have come in years, is it because for all intents and purposes the game is "done", and so rock solid that improvements and fixes are no longer needed?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I'd really like to get involved (even if that just means becoming proficient).

There is a beta of the new version out. You said is there a source code released? Nope. It is not open sourced.

 Far from it. But this project is also a hobby for both the core developer and the addon developers. (See: http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/faq.html#A2)

The core source code has not been released, and is unlikely to be. EDIT: Please, no arguments about why Orbiter should be open source.

The new version will contain a some physics refinements but the biggest change will be having the graphics client separated out from the core. See the Orbiter Visualisation Project forum for more info: http://www.orbiter-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50

Watch the Addon Requests page (http://www.orbiter-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49) if you like. Or make something of your own. New addon developers are always welcome.

Thanks all; that gives me plenty of hope and plenty to read.
