From an Apollo moon landing hoax believer:

``[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]NASA also claim the Apollo missions traveled to Moon by 'trans lunar orbit'. This is complete and utter nonsense, as it defies all laws of physics in relation to the way objects move in space. The only way to travel in space is by orbiting the planet from where the spacecraft was launched. On each orbit the spacecraft is moved out a little further from the planet which it is orbiting. You can imagine it as giro circles, or the groove on a vinyl record, moving from the center of record to the outer edge, the center part being the heavenly body, (planet), from which the spacecraft was launched. That's why it takes the shuttle 66 hrs to reach the International Space Station 185 miles above Earth.``

Is anyone going to put forth the effort to enlighten this poor soul? Maybe use his record analogy to help explain it. And hey, that is a possible path an ion craft might take. :p

---------- Post added at 03:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:41 PM ----------

My guess is that the theorist wanted some reason to call Apollo false and read an article about SMART-1 or some other ion craft that used the analogy. The analogy stuck, but none of the physics behind it did. Thus we get a dumb theory from a misunderstanding of a analogy that only holds in specific settings.

From that page:

So Apollo 12 got to the Moon in 26.5 hours, and yet Apollo 17 took 76 hours, how come? Did Apollo 17 get held up in a 'coned off' section of the galaxy on its way to and from the Moon?

The guy also does not have the numbers of Apollo right, despite the easy chance to get them. He does not seem interested in truth, but rather in conspiracy.

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/ap12fj/10day4_loi.htm

Does somebody here own the books, he references, so people could check if he uses the right data, or if there is an error in both?

Also, he could have searched the Trajectory data of the Shuttle before writing. The shuttle does NOT spiral to the ISS at all. If it all, it spirals AWAY from the ISS by exospheric drag, while each propulsive maneuver brings it closer.

I've got the Apollo journals for both Apollo 12 and 17.

According to the journals Apollo 12 was "inserted into a 168.8 by 62.6 mile lunar orbit at about 83-1/2 hours".

Apollo 17 was slower. It reached the moon at 88:54:22 GET.

It would be interesting (but pointless) to make an addon for orbiter that simulates all the conspiracy theorist physics, to prove how stupid it is.

At which point the conspiracy theorists would claim that your addon doesn't reflect reality and is just a coverup.

You can't win against conspiracy theorists. They always see exactly what they want to, regardless of whether it's true or not.

You can win. You can ridicule them until they cry. Treat them as the idiots that they are.

As much fun as that is, that sort of thing tends to get me banned from forums.

Me too, but I accept this as the price of going to bed with my brain still in place.

Idiot-baiting is always fun, though if you do it too much it gets tiresome as it's just too easy. I always enjoy calling them a commie. When they ask why I make up some rediculous reason, stating one of their previous posts, but with no logical evidence, then just keep calling them a commie until they leave or invoke Godwin's law. It's kind of fun to argue that they are a commie with the same lack of logic and reason that they use to claim it was a conspiracy, whilst getting insults in at the same time!

His email is on the poorly designed website. Maybe we should all email him pointing out that he is an idiot?

Yeah. But let me first write an email to the observatory of Bochum. I want to slap him with German evidence. ;)

My email:

Conspiracy Theorists are some of my least favorite people, especially when they have no good evidence to back up their theories. I'm a freaking 14 year old, and I still know more about orbital physics than you. May I suggest a little game called "Orbiter"? It is a space flight simulator that uses real Newtonian physics, and the method you described is NOT how you get to the moon. There's this little thing called "Escape Velocity", the speed where an object is free of a planet's gravity forever. For Earth, that speed is 7500 miles per second. I might recommend a little research before making a conspiracy website.

I hope you fixed that 7500 mail per second before posting, because it is 7500 meters per second :)

But im sure that guy wont notice difference anyway.
