Howdy, folks.

I'm pleased to announce that most of the internal systems for Astra Space have been finished the remaining items are primarily niceties. There is one glaring exception to this, which I would like to get public input on. That is this: Astra Space will have a system that allows ad hoc groups of pilots to work together to complete assignments, goals, what have you. This is going to be the "contract system" and the idea is focused on getting pilots to work together on projects, versus the same old fly from point A to point B on a 'cargo run'. The leaders of these ad hoc groups will be able to select contracts for their groups of pilots to carry out.

Here's what I want to know from the community: in a system like this, would you prefer that 'contracts' are generated by the system and simply selected, or would you prefer to be able to write your own( simply RPing that they came from another source)? The immediate tradeoff is this: having the system do it will take longer to develop and be more limited. Having a person write the contract instead will require more thought by the person, but will be just about limitless in possibilities and 'missions' or 'assignments' or whatever you'd like to call them. Keep in mind that each pilot would have to fly 'in series', passing off the SCN file from pilot to pilot via the contract system, as OMP isn't viable at the moment.

The idea here is to give Orbiter pilots some purpose, allow them to work together towards something. Orbiter being what it is, I've always felt that goals have been lacking for people who have mastered orbital mechanics, or at least the various MFDs.

Some of the other features that have been implemented:

  • The Employee store is now fully functional, and users can purchase vessels, space station components, consumables, and more.
  • Flight Groups have been implemeneted. Flight Groups are ad hoc teams of pilots that are simple to create and allow pilots to organize themselves as they see fit. Flight Groups allow pilots to work together to achieve goals that would not otherwise be possible. Leaders of Flight Groups have the ability to manage just about every aspect of their membership and other such settings.
  • Vessels are now subject to more 'real-world' constraints, such as requiring fuel to be purchased for each flight, maintanence crews to process the vehicle after each mission, and loss of vehicle situations actually resulting in the user losing his/her vessel (based on the honor system, sadly). Successfully completing assignments means you get paid, as well. :)
  • The ability to manage your personal 'fleet' of vehicles and space stations, including customization both visually and textually.
  • And numerous other little items that are too small to be mentioned here but I feel add to the experience.
In addition to the question I posed above, how does this sound to folks? Does this excite anyone, or am I wasting my time? Honest, mature opinions from everyone are welcome. More information on individual systems are available on request, and I'll have a screenshot of the basic pilot interface up shortly.

I'd like personal, written contracts.

This sounds AWESOME to me. I'd love to do something like this. Are there any more details on how this would work?

See the screenshot tour above for some more details.

The idea for contracts is this:
The leader of the Flight Group sets up a 'contract' for his/her group. The leader specifies an overall name and description of the contract that describe the purpose, etc. The leader then posts the starting SCN file. A pilot from the group can log in, accept the current flight (each flight will be detailed by the leader, as well), download the SCN file, and fly the mission using the Flight Assignments modules you see above in screenshots. S/He then takes the finished SCN file and reuploads it so the next individual can fly. I'm thinking the same pilot can't fly twice in a row, and the leader can kill the contract at any time. Keep in mind that the word 'contract' is just a way for me to get people to interact, as 'contracts' from fictional companys should be larger goals that require more pilots to work together. No one is actually writing a contract in the RL legal sense. :)

Does that answer your question, or can I provide more details on something?

I like it. Sounds awesome. But how will you prevent two people from downloading the same scenario?

There will need to be a lock-unlock system for the contract such that only one individual can accept the assignment at once.

Ooh, okay. Sounds sweet! How can people "join" it?

The short answer to that question is that I'd like to get this 'contract' system in place before I start getting people. Having only partially working systems is a real downer, trust me, even if by partial here I mean 95% complete. But I'll put your name down on the list of interested folks.

Anyone else like to be included on said list? :)

Sounds good, the both of you.

Looks like I have a few other interested folks. I've also decided that, as I know where I'm going with the contract system and I won't have to do much managing initially, I'm opening join applications to the public. Interested parties can head over to http://astraspace.net76.net/join.php and I will process the form within a day or so (usually less).

The more the merrier! :)

A quick update for those interested: An Astra Space FAQ is now available on the AS website here: http://astraspace.net76.net/faq.php
